I was re-reading a couple of old Dragon magazines last night, and I was wondering about the variations on the Gygax name. I noticed three:

Gary Gygax
E. Gary Gygax
Ernie Gygax

(I also saw Luke Gygax, but I'm assuming he is definately a separate person).

My guess is that out of the three names above, it's two people - Gary and Ernie - and one of them occasionally uses the third signature.

Can anyone explain who's who in the Gygax family? And what their roles were in the creation of D&D?

Regards

Mike

Gary Gygax and E. Gary Gygax are the same persons - the creator of D&D. I believe E. stands for Ernest.

Ernie is Gary's son, an early "playtester" of D&D. You can find characters of the guys in the 1E Rogue's Gallery.

Spot-on Ralf.

Ernie, Luke, and Cindy are EGG's children (and are anagrammed into Erelhei Cinlu in D3, FWIW).

Thanks for that.... I suspected Gary and E. Gary were one and the same, but Ernie was a mystery.
