With regard to shill bidding I agree that shill bidding is unacceptable.  Although it is wide spread and largely unstopable.  Therefore, there is an onus on the bidder to check their bids.  I would suggest that mdr knew exactly what he was doing when he bid and had plenty of opportunity to check prior.  I am sure you would have ... as would I!

Further this supposed shill bidder is currently winning some other auctions.  So if you see apocalypse stone or guide to waterdeep end up in this seller's kit you would have your proof.   Otherwise this may well be a genuine bidder.

Don't forget that focusing on zero bidders ignores the fact that it is easy to shill bid with accounts that have feedback.

I seen it... that is to say, I saw it before I bid. I agree that $250 for the 16 mods is on the high side, but my reasoning was as follows:

1. Four modules in SW... worth $20 each on average I would think
2. Ten pastels in what looks like mint condition... say $15 each
3. The GDQ modules are my favourite series of all time, that's worth something. I was looking through my collection the other day and my current editions of the GDQ series are pretty beat up... too much in the way of play, so fair condition only. I really wanted a set in better nick.
4. Another $10 for the last two modules.

What's that... $240 all up? Most of it logical, with a percentage of emotion thrown in. Plus, picking up the modules from one source saves me a bunch on shipping - trying to buy just the seven GDQ mods from separate sellers, I'd pay $9 per mod for GP shipping to Australia. Getting all 16 mods in one hit saves me in the region of $100 shipping costs.

I saw the zero feedback bidder on the auction... I guessed his max bid was $250 from the way the bidding was going, and I was happy to pay it. I don't believe it was shilling, or I wouldn't have bid. But in the end, either way I was happy to pay $250 for the reasons above.

BTW Improv... I posted yesterday on the Sutherland thread how there were two auctions I really wanted, but could only bid on one. I decided on the miniatures, but the other was the cartoon strip... good to see it's finding a home close by. Congrats on the win.

Oh, and saying "I would suggest that mdr knew exactly what he was doing".... that's usually a pretty long shot.

Regards

Mike

One more thing - I bid on these late yesterday afternoon, just before I left work. Last night I was thinking about the auction, and I was wondering if I'd make the "Silliest auction price" thread... if it's a mark of distinction to make the "Fun Finds" thread, is it a black mark to find yourself on the "Silliest Price" thread?

Mike

I have been on the silliest bid list ... personally I consider myself proud to be considered for this list.  After all we are grown men playing games.  Doesn't that qualify us for being at least a little bit silly :-)

M.

P.S.  I had every confidence that you reasoned out your bids prior.

Not with the reasoning you provided, Mike---I'll happily retract the silliness from my initial post :D :D

Thanks Allan... but after Improv's post about grown men playing games, I ask - nay, DEMAND - that you leave the silliness where it is, and I'll wear it as a badge of honour.

We should have an annual awards ceremony... Best Fun Find, Silliest Bid, Most Obscure Reseach Tidbit, Most Interesting Item posted to the ebay thread... there must be others.

Regards

Mike

Sounds perfectly sensible to me (apart  from that pesky shrinkwrap which would have to come off...).

These WDs should cheer us both up, anyhow... Auctions are still live and already the prices are kinda crazy.

#9 (VG at best): $32, 2 bids and 5 days 22 hours to go!

#10 (VG-, possibly toned paper, too): $34, 2 bids and likewise 5 days 22 hours to go!

#115!!: $24, 2 bids and 4 days 21 hours to go

(This one I gotta watch)

I never mentioned the final prices (all very top-heavy, IMHO).

#9: $58, #10: $65, #115: $36

(the latest early-ish batch; http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5922236237 , etc., have returned to sanity; and the recent fine condition reprints of #2 & #3 didn't go for $100 each... "only" $38 & $40).

And #13 in this lot has got to be worth more than £5.

Like every other copy of WD13.  Why?  Because there is a photo of me in it!  Well a photo of my back actually.  At Games Day.

You are completely right.  I can't believe that I got it wrong.  #16 it is.

Anyway, page 20, bottom row of pictures, the one in the centre.  Top right of the picture is a sign "OLD WEST".  Beneath that is major_axe and to his left (sporting a parka and a rucksack) is me.

The same photo was used in another publication.  But bigger.  And you can witness the true horror of my haircut!  8O Can't remember which magazine though.  major_axe?

A few recent auction closes. Not overly silly, but note- or comment-worthy, perhaps.

TBH #12, 14 & 17 ("slight staining" on #17): $42
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5922135261
Was totally unadvertised here, yet two individuals still went head-to-head (plus I gave a gentle nudge just to see... oops...).
"Rare" is subjective. The same seller had "Very Rare" against Imagine #1 (8O).
These later issues should've run above 500 copies, possibly closer 750-1,000, but I don't remember circulation ever being more than hinted-at (usually in context of back issues).

Large bundle of nice condition, first edn. Judges Guild material... both Mike <improvstone> and myself didn't get a look in at those prices, although Mike was closer. (what's new? ;)).
Tegel Manor: $56
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5922188716
Blackmoor... erm, sorry, First Fantasy Campaign: $52
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5922189140
Wilderlands of High Fantasy: $38
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5922189370
Island Book 1: $21
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5922192166
(aside: who is this <invincibleoverlord> guy. A JG version of Frank?)

Tegel Manor certainly seems well high, since it was a regular publication with the JG Journal, no? Any thoughts?
(another copy at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 5923621252 , but not so good).

===

ed.:
but I see you got the SW fighting wheel, Mike; ahead of <invincibleoverlord> and his hoards... $138
(*wonder whether it has the "Made in Britain" sticker*)

I am pretty sure invincibleoverlord is a shill account.

It does have the "Made in Britain" sticker.  Should I have mentioned that in the auction?!

And what is a shill account?  Is that implying that the seller (me, in this case) made a fake account to hike up the auction price?  If that's the implication, I may have to start giving folks a virtual middle finger.  :D

It doesn't look like shilling to me. Invincibleoverlord has been bidding up a storm over the last couple of days, but it looks like the enthusiasm of a collector new to ebay. He's bid on 54 auctions, and was won or is high bidder on 31. These auctions are spread over a couple of dozen sellers, some of which (Hissingelf, Tadashie etc) have been around for quite a while and have solid reputations.

Regards

Mike
