That is odd, BUT the seller is Monte Cook's wife and I think they posted it on their site so they may see a lot of new/"0" bids with that kind of press.

I was bidding on a silver anniv box set from Gal Havoc/"Monte and Sue Cook"

The price went higher than I thought reasonable, boosted by 0 feedback bidders, just like here.  Lo and behold, after the auction ended, the 0 bidders didn't pay and I received a Second Chance Offer at a so-so price.  I didn't like the smell of the whole thing and declined.   :?

Whoa... the implications there are kind of sucky.... Are you thinking that Monte/Gal shilled the auction?

That would be a huge scandal.  Maybe we need to ask PurpleDragon to investigate.

The only silver set that I could find in their history is this one:

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& ... 3183156621

It does not have any 0 bidders and it was won buy a person who has a  168 rating with no negatives (who had also won several other auctions from them). $79 is a bit high, but when you consider how much the market has been manipulated for this set, it is not surprising.

I went through about 50 of their 196 auctions and I only found four 0 bidders involved. Those bidders were mostly low end that had bid in only one or two auctions. In their higher end auctions (RPGA1,2; Adventurer Guild modules; typeset DM guide, etc) there was no evidence of shill bidding.

All of the auctions appear to be fair and on the up-and-up.

As to Mordrin's Silver Anniversary auction, it may have been a simple case of someone not involved with the seller and the second chance offer could have been legit. The auction posted at the top might just be the second attempt to sell it...or Mordrin may simply be mistaken as to the seller. Mordrin, is this the same auction or was it another one too early to show up in the history?

Thanks for the detective work, PD.  My apologies for my poor memory - one of the bidders was still in single digits at the time of the auction, and that must be what I was thinking of.

(fwiw, I was coming back to this thread today to caution against assuming anything about Gal either way, though).

Not a problem, Mordrin, and I am more than happy to perform any investigations of questionable practices on ebay. I always go in with the assumption of innocence.

Personally, I will never understand why ebay allows for second chance offers. Such a situation can only open up the suggestions of shill bidding or questionable auctions. It is a system that only protects the seller and does nothing for the buyers. Even the seller who makes such an offer is opening himself up for questions...so it really is not that good for sellers either. Perhaps under closer inspection,  the "second chance" concept really is designed to benefit ebay, big surprise there.

Er, did I miss something, or is this just an opened Silver Anniversary box with additional G2 for $130?

I emailed the seller (before i realized he was overseas).  He told me he sliced open the shrink so he could check the contents but the wrap was still there, just not sealed.

I find that habit rather amusing. If it's open, it's open. What's the point in keeping the original shrinkwrap?

... and if I was looking for an original shrinkwrap, Jon Oakes is the man who can provide anything.

Unique item?!?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 3189019290

It's painful.  But have a look at his other auctions.

As if he didn't make enough money already.

Please don't let anyone bid.
