The larger label indicates a 2nd or later print but I'd bet a 3rd or later print based on my research. Woodgrain 1st prints, and possibly some 2nd and 3rd prints, have smaller labels, i.e., they are trimmed closer to the printing (both the top and side labels). This being the result of a bit of research I've been conducting after examining over 20 different woodgrain sets. Anything else is a "Frankenstein".

In a Q&A with Gygax, he related that the labels came from the printer precut to a standard size and were hand pasted for the entire print run. The next set of boxes had it's own set of labels as well. Further, he stated they did not have enough money for extra labels for each print run. A run of 1,000 boxes = 1,000 labels.

Shawn and Devon, I'd appreciate an email confirming the printing.

I'll post my research here eventually. I have images of 20 confirmed printings and another 5 personally inspected sets.

Thanks Frank! Another matter is the side label. On the hybrid print, 3rd+, the label is pasted onto the left side. All other printings have it on the right side of the box.

If you don't mind sharing, Paul, what was the result of that disputed 1st printing that you won for a record price? Did it turn out to be legit, or a Frankenstein?

In any case, I look forward to seeing the results of your research when you post it. It sounds like real interesting detective work.

Dathon,

It was legit after all, IMHO. Foulfoot came in and set the record straight on the lightness of the paperstock in question.

There was ALOT of debate and I personally wasn't convinced until Mr Foot came in and had a compelling set of arguments.

It's a worthy thread to review! I just can't find it at the moment. I'm sure someone will post a link.

I'm almost certain the original owner wouldn't have "thrown it away" for that price, even if they were unaware of the printing distinctions.

(How many of us (especially those without families) have got lines in their will to say "don't trash all that 'D&D stuff', since it's not all common/mass-produced?).

The pic shown doesn't look like its shinked and it looks strangly like half a coffee stain right in the middle of it, far from the MINT it claims to be anyway...

Or maybe he used that sticky plastic to "preserve" the covers. I've seen some auction descriptions where the seller thought that made it more collectible. Ouch....
