That's alright Dave.
It was just a hedge on my part. I wouldn't have minded picking it up for
cheap but wasn't so sure about spending that little bit more.
I'd be interested to know whether you're able to fix the foxing or not!

Sure, nobody apologize for out-bidding the lowly grodog ;)  :D

ABEbooks has a definition of:  "Foxed, Foxing-[image] Brown spotting of the paper caused by a chemical reaction, generally found in 19th century books, particularly in steel engravings of the period."  They also have an image of foxing at AbeBooks: Book Collecting Guide - AbeBooks' Glossary of Book Terms

Foxing, as defined by Stanford...:  Conservation OnLine

...and by the OED:  4. trans. To discolour (the leaves of a book). See FOXED ppl. a. and from FOXED:

3. Of the leaves of books, also of timber; Discoloured by decay; stained with brownish-yellow spots.

1847 HALLIWELL s.v., Timber is said to be foxed, when it becomes discoloured in consequence of incipient decay. Warw. 1848 HARE Guesses Ser. II. 335 A torn or foxt and dog's-eared volume. 1885 A. DOBSON At Sign Lyre 83 The Burton I bought for a florin, And the Rabelais foxed and flea'd.

"Foxing describes the brown spots that form on paper, a scourge on rare books that can greatly diminish their value. It's caused when too much bleach used to manufacture paper reacts chemically with dampness"

Looks like mold/mildew to me.  I'd be interested to see what it really is too.

Here's a rare one :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 3170198711
http://i19.ebayimg.com/02/i/01/2f/ab/9f_1_s.JPG

It's an auction for a 5th print original box set plus supplements but it
also has something called "The Book of Monsters" by Phil Edgren.
I can find only 2 references to this on the net - on afterglow's list and
that weird french site abcdaire.

It's the 1976 version by Little Soldier Games rather than the 1978
edition published by Gamescience.

Nice buy Chromatic. I figured it would be you or Adam to win the 10th Anniversary Combo. :)

The Book of Monsters that I own has a different cover, but the same copyright date. It was also published by Little Soldier. Mine also doesn't state a printing. I wonder which is the first print? BTW Nev, I bought it off of eBay Australia for $19.50. I was expecting to see you bid.

I think it was a decent price for the 10th ann combo pack. I knew you had that one already Burnie, and I havent seen Adam bid on much for a while. I'm still looking for a few more if anyone has any for sale or trade. I still hate bidding against a fellow acaeum member though, sorry Scott  :(

Hah. I often forget to check the australian ebay.

I have a separate sieve set up for it (because there's stuff I'd
be willing to buy from oz that I wouldn't from the US so
I have totally different trash words).

BTW To anyone who's updated to 1.3.4 can you tell me if the View links
have stopped working for you? I made a change so they would work
on Mac OS X but seemed to have stuffed it for some windows users.
I've done a new beta 1.3.5 which does a check for your OS.

I wasn't surprised to be outbid, but I was surprised that someone here didn't nab this one ;)

I must be missing something - that stuff doesn't seem worth that much to me!

Ah - just spotted it - Jade Hare - it's nowhere in the pictures!

Yeah. I had emailed the seller to get a confirmation about Jade Hare; it was apparently in excellent shape, without the cover.
