Dude, all due respect, you posted it here in the "Interesting items on Ebay" thread. :?   I was under the impression that you put it out there for anyone who wanted it, as that is what this thread is all about:

That said, I have everything in that lot and will still be more than happy to ask the seller to relist it for you instead. :)

Well, it is possible he didn't even see the post about it here... a lot of people on these boards use a special eBay search program (I tried one, but it was too slow loading for me to find it practical) which gives them a slight edge on finding stuff (not to mention those who use sniping scripts,) and its more likely he found it that way, saw it as a good deal, and bought it. I would have too, but since I don't have the money in my budget at the moment, I just like to look.

[edit]

Seems he's responded himself. :) So, ignore me.

Yes, but I only looked at the link before I even read the full post.  Typically when stuff gets put here, its up for anyone who wants it. By the time I realized that he wanted it himself, I had already BINed it. Again though I would be more than happy to ask the seller to relist it as its not that big of a deal to me.

I dig... I guess I didn't read the fine print... thanks for the reply.

I'm not a crybaby,  I was just unsure if it was a good deal and on another board I hang on when somebody posts a eBay auction it's fair to assume they want first crack at it unless they say otherwise...

My bad...

what should we do?

I would BIN... or trade/buy with you.

let me know...

I will shoot an email to the seller and see if he will relist it and mututally withdraw the transaction to get his fees back from Ebay. Assuming he is okay with that I will shoot you a PM and let you know its back up again.   If for whatever reason he insists on me paying for it, I will pay for it and when it arrives I will sell it to you at cost.  In other words $38 plus what it costs to ship to you.  Does that seem fair?

COOL!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

FYI... The item was $39.99 and with the insurance and regular shipping $8.00... the total was $49.64

maybe I should just send you a check and you can give him my shipping address. Or is that too "shady"?

Well, lets see what the seller says first.  It be easiest on all parties if he just agrees to relist it which I have just asked him to do.  Otherwise, that will be fine. :)

Pretty decent of bclarkie for that I think.

If I had seen your post the most you would have got would have been digital pics of me with the items after they arrived at my house.  For example; "me at the door, thanking the postman", "me, grinning at the lovely package", "me, carefully opening the box", "delight at the contents" etc etc...  :P

More broadly, there has been debate here in the past about what this thread is actually for, given that there is an element of (friendly) competition here - oh, as well as group-hugs and collecting solidarity of course  :D .  Truth is that people will always post about interesting items - so we might as well have a busy thread for such.  Different people have different ideas as to whether to post or not.  My view is that with so many collectors hunting, often daily, most interesting items do actually get spotted, especially if they are not a BIN, but run for five or seven days.  So you might as well put them up for discussion.  That way I have been kindly educated - by various experts here - about all sorts of different items.

Hmmm, having said that, every now and again, the odd item does slip through...

Very decent indeed... I almost want to take back my comments.

But I'm happy that he decided to let me have it, since it was unclear to me the nature of this thread.

I wonder if I had said "please don't buy this out from under me", which I almost wrote as my first line but assumed what I had mentioned in my other post, that there's prolly some sort of unwritten rule that if somebody is asking about something they prolly want it for themselves (honor among thieves?), would this not have happened?

Should we make it clear in our future posts our intent and should we honor such requests?

Am I not getting it still?

Brian:
*shock*  You Bclarkied-It-Now, and now you want to un-BIN it?

TheMilford:
This thread is for posting interesting eBay items.  Posting a normal auction is waving a flag to the others.  Posting an underpriced BIN is like waving a big red flag while jumping up-and-down and screaming.   :D   Sometimes people let each other have a go at an item, and other times not.  Brian is being nice to you and everyone else in trying to un-BIN it.   If the price had been cheaper, then I would have BINed it for myself, and some of it would be returning to eBay in separate lots.

I've always viewed everything in this very useful thread as fair game, or red meat to the pride more like it. Otherwise I guess the thread would be titled, "Interesting items I'm about to bid on..." Doubt it's a stretch to suggest many non members also come along to see what's been turned up.

Here's a suggestion for another thread - "Interesting items on eBay that anyone in the world can bid on because the seller has finally discovered a world atlas..." Or is that too long?

Is that a can o' worms I hear?

Being an Acaeum member does not make one a nice guy, an honorable guy, or anything other than a guy who joins the site.  And even if Acaeum members did not bid up the price on an item, someone in the general public likely would.

The Acaeum is open to the public, so anyone can read what's been posted.  The Acaeum Effect (not quite the Slashdot Effect) on prices has been previously noted.

So, should I have originally written?

"Hey guys I'm about to bid on this, so please be nice and don't scoop it out from under me, do you think it's a good deal?"

How, as a person getting back into the game, do you ask a question like this without getting beaten to the punch? Should I just assume that some folks here, and I'm still getting to know you all, will jump at opportunities more quickly than others?

There should be some sort of code or obvious mantra that if one is asking about an auction for themselves we know to honor their pursuit... and help out. It's not like I have that much money to be scooping up all the auctions posted here I fancy, so my inclination would be to look at it and maybe offer some insight. I would assume if the person passes on it they will let us know, or could be asked.

I mean hopefully eventually we'll all end up with the items we are looking for. There's not that many of us here right? :)

You could use the Appraisal forum or once you get to know who specialises in certain items you could ask via PM. Or use the pricing/ auction guides on the main site and make you own estimate. Or you could do what I do and find out you paid too much after you bought it.
