Well, I was pronouncing it "eh-say-um" at the beginning of Gen Con last year, but everybody else was using a hard-k, so I gave up and went along with the crowd.

Beyondthebreach wrote:Okay (and I know this is for fun . . . but on a more technical note) - the Acaeum is supposed to be a "mock" latin sounding work.  It is spelled with the vowel dipthong "ae".  This sound is pronounced with a Long E as in "He" or ""Me"   or "Caesar".

Personally, I pronounce it like "Aaaah!" "Kay" "umm".

The soft 'c' just looks wrong for an English word.  I might even go with a "ch" sound there, if I was feeling Italian.

For Latin, it's not clear what to do with the 3-vowel cluster in the middle of the word.  Let's assume it's a digraph* 'ae', followed by a 'u', and not some bizarre triphthong "aeu":

*wikipedia wrote:In Latin it represents the diphthong [ai], which in Vulgar Latin was monophthongized to [ɛ]; in medieval manuscripts the digraph was frequently replaced by the ligature æ.

The other vowels lack diacritics and must be assumed to be short.  So my vote goes for:

UH-SIGH-UM (quite like "asylum", but without the "l")

I've pretty much used the "Uh-Kay-Um" pronunciation too, until I saw the FAQ...

I try to remember the FAQ pronunciation but I still have a tendency to go with Ah-KAY-Um.  :)

Actually, there is a good example - this is the word that I always thought was the inspiration for Acaeum.

Athenaeum (ath-e-nee-uhm)

1) an institution for the promotion of literary or scientific learning.

2) a library or reading room.

(Just think:  Soft "C"  :)  . . . like Caesar )

I disagree with the "official" statement.

I know of no latin word starting with "Ac" in which the C is soft. It's always hard.

So I pronounce it as if it were Latin: ah-KAY-um.
