With Gen Con approaching, one burning question exists.

If you were to say "I'm here for the Acaeum gathering", how do you say Acaeum?

Try spelling your pronounciation dictionary style (don't forget to show which syllable is accented...if you pronounce it as having multiple syllables, that is), without reading anyone else's reply.  I'd like to see just how many utterly different takes there are on it.   :D

Wow!  I never noticed that before.  I have always said it:  A-see-UM.

I've talked to a few other members in person and they seem to pronounce it the same way.

I can't change now . . .  :)

I don't pronounce it, because its not a word. Its just letters thrown together, so I guess, if I had to pronounce it... Ah Kay Eee Umm.

That's how I pronounce it too but in Canada we would spell it: EH-see-UM.

Somehow, looking at the way it's pronounced in the FAQ section, Foghorn Leghorn (with his Southern accent) just popped into my mind . . . . :)

If you pronounce Acaeum correctly three times while looking into a mirror, bclarkie jumps out of it and skins your ass raw.

No offense to bclarkie. But rarely do I ever read something that makes me laugh out loud hard. Usually a chuckle, but nothing like that.

I've always said "ah SAY uhn" too, and though I don't recall reading the FAQ before I probably did back when the site launched.  It's always fun talking to RJK or Paul or others, since we all pronounce it differently :D

Actually it doesnt really matter how you pronounce it.  If you don't know the secret handshake, Frank Mentzer puts a burlap bag over your head and the rest of us get to take turns hurling unopened boxes of Spellfire cards at you.  PDT_Armataz_01_12

I've always used a hard 'K' sound, i.e: "uh-KAY-um". But I'm from Arkansas, so take that with a grain of salt. :)

Okay (and I know this is for fun . . . but on a more technical note) - the Acaeum is supposed to be a "mock" latin sounding work.  It is spelled with the vowel dipthong "ae".  This sound is pronounced with a Long E as in "He" or ""Me"   or "Caesar".

The "AE" vowel dipthong is also sometimes pronounced with an "I" as is "Dry" or "My".  I believe this is more of the "classical way it was pronounced with the Church latin having given it the Long E sound.  Thus, Aeneas (Greek Hero) should be pronounced "I-Ne-us".

The "C" is not hard like a "K" as it is followed by an "E" sound (or an "I").  English follows latin in this regard - "e" and "i" and the "AE" dipthong after produce a soft "C"  (which is pronouned with an "S" sound". )  Thus . . . "EH-see-UM".

An "a" "o" or "u" after a C produce a hard "C" or "K" sound.    But, again, the AE together is not the same as an "a"  (just like with Caesar).

(That's right - finally putting that English major and history/philosophy minor to good work.  I knew the day would come when it would prove useful!   :D  )

ah-SEE-um

Although, when I first heard of the site, I read it as ah-KAY-um.
