I always love seeing the fees for picking up locally. The funny thing is that they just go ahead and list their home address on the auction.

And the media mail charge is jacked WAY up...

On an unrelated note, if you feel like you'd be interested in catching up on some reading, try this other one of theirs.  Of course, your only option is the "convenience fee" for pickup...

What an idiot. He says that he only listed paypal because ebay wouldn't let him list otherwise.

I didn't realize Frank Mentzer had a nickname.  I guess they don't call him "compiled by" for nothing

Trying to skate around selling pdf's and print outs? There's a nice long explanation. I'm not sure I buy that the seller has taken the time to scan in all of his items...

Excellent.

He might have gotten away with it but he posted his email address. A big no-no with ebay because they don't want people selling outside of ebay.

Figure this one out...

The copyright inside says "Revised Edition - December, 1979", with no mention of a printing version - making this a possible FIRST PRINTING!

If it's a FIRST PRINTING!, then why would it be a "Revised Edition"? :)

Well, that is certainly a pet peeve for me.... so I sent the following.  Feel free to comment, edit, clarify and use as will.  If we send something like this to sellers, eventually they will know more about book collecting.

Revised printings by default can not be a first printing of the first edition.  Were it a first printing of another edition, it would be irrelevant since people who collect first printings are generally looking for the first edition.  For the edition to change, revisions must be made.  Printings change every time they reprint due to sales.  So, for instance a first edition may not be worth much if it is a 15th printing of the first edition and a 2cnd edition is seldom collectible if it is the first printing of the second edition.  For a couple of centuries collectors have focused on first printings of first editions.  The exceptions are when the revision contain material that is unique and more important... than the original first edition.  (for example, hypothetically a book of prints might have a second edition with an essay by Salvador Dali about how bad they are... and a print by Dali... that would likely be of much greater interest than the book of bad prints in an earlier printing even the first printing of the first edition.)  Booksellers sometimes use the term first thus to distinguish and call attention to the distinction.

I don't think they'll get it.  The concept is too complicated.

How about:

"This book is from the first "edition" of AD&D.

It is not a first "print" of this particular book.

The word "revised" should tell you that because a first "print" cannot be "revised."  How can you "revise" something before you print it?

There is a huge difference in the price of a "print" and an "edition."

Here is a link that will help you sort out the printings:  <Acaeum Link>"

"But I have watched the dragons come, fire-eyed, across the world."

The only problem is by making it potentially easier to understand it becomes incorrect.  This book may be a first printing of a revised edition and that is not usually what they think they have, nor is it what we usually want to collect.

Yes, but it's far, far better (hey, you asked for opinions ...).

Your original note is a dense wall of text, likely to have the recipient reaching for the delete key by the second sentence. It is full of minutiae that is of interest to almost no regular human being, and your examples are, frankly, confusing.

Far better to point the seller to the DMG page here, which uses many identifiers to help us all determine editions/printings.
