She either realized her major pricing error and sold the books to someone else for more money.... or she stole photos without knowing what she was doing.  (Note that I didn't ask for this price, I just stumbled into it quite happily, I thought!)

The photo is of a beautiful first printing of Greyhawk, And, what seemed likely to be first printings of EW and Swords and Spells.

What I got was an 11th printing Greyhawk, 8th printing EW and a soiled, spotted and cover stained 4th of Swords and Spells.  None, obviously have the 5.00 price on the bottom.

Still a good buy of course, but what a frustrating package to get today.

I do not think that this belongs in the Shady Dealer thread.

Perhaps a new thread called Uninformed sellers who sell things VIA BINs cheap as hell because they dont know any better and use pics borrowed from other places.

Perhaps if you had written the seller before hitting the BIN seller would have let you know more about the items actually listed.

But yes seller SHOULD have stated pics not actual items being sold and described the soiling and stains better.

Seller did state names written inside cover of two of them... were names inside any of the books you got?

STILL:

The Soiled/Stained/Spotted S&S is worth at least as much if not more than you paid for all three Supplement Books together.

I don't think any one here would have sent an email first, lol.  That's a picture of a beautiful first print Greyhawk for $15.  I didn't even know the other two books were there until after I bought the lot.

The problem with the stealing photos is that I can't find a common source for the pics and text.  Some might be from RPG and/or here.  But, why the heck weren't they all lifted from a single source, if that's what she was doing.

I can't complain about the price of what I received, but I certainly thought it was my "fun find" of the season.  And, wouldn't you wonder, if someone got to her and swapped them out if you were me?

Note: I am trying to be careful not to make wild accusations, but the sale is clearly either misrepresented or a bait and switch happened.  I think either option qualify as Shady.  jmho

A Bait and switcher would almost by definition KNOW exactly what was being baited and switched along with the values of those items.
A B&S seller would not have all 3 Supplement books in one listing for a BIN of just $15.
Seller was without a doubt ignorant about the value of the books in that listing....

Three OD&D Supplements for a BIN of $15?
There is No way that seller really knew what she had.
No telling where the pics came from either.

But you are right, I would not have waited for a note in response before hitting the BIN either.

Still, I would have posted this in the FUN FINDS thread though.
Not the shady dealers thread.
Can you post pics of the books covers?

They are completely unremarkable, lol.  But, I added them.

And, you are right bait and switch was not the right term.  The potential would have been for someone to have contacted her and paid more for the ones in the picture and given here these to send me.  Hopefully, unlikely, but you never know when potentially three first print books of high desirability are involved.

What I got is certainly still a steal, but... certainly not the deal of the year, either.

Wish I had seen that auction. I need a better condition EW than what I have now.

$15 and free shipping for these three books?

If you're unhappy, Pipswich, I'll refund your money and pay for shipping to my collection.   :D

At that price, only a fool would have contacted the seller before hitting the BIN button.

*grin*

Wonder how many purchases qualify for fun finds and shady seller, lol.  Odd circumstance for sure.  I looked over the books carefully and she noted two had names inside, which these do.  And they were shipped from Juneau AK a day after they were bought on ebay.  I think I must conclude that she did simply lift the photos unknowingly.  That or there is a shady collector near Juneau, lol.

I would still be a little upset, deal or no deal.

It's dishonest and and stupid what she did and should be held accountable.

In any case, you wanna sell be that EW at a deal of a price? Mine has blank pages (weird).

Worse, her response was not only rude... she apologized for me being upset, rather than for misrepresenting the items.  I usually only go neutral on noobie sellers, but that is a pet peeve.  Please don't ever apologize for me being upset that you snookered me.  That just doesn't go over well.  She got a negative and a couple of ones for communication and description.  C'est la vie.

And this is entirely regardless of who won the auction, but negging someone on a deal where (from the pics of the outside) the books look to be in good nick for $15.... I think that takes the piss somewhat.

That's an amazing price and although the seller has clearly not used the pics of the items themselves, I'm not sure about 'Shady dealer' and negging...

(but please, I would still think exactly the same, if it were Badmike, mbassoc or whomever)  8)

Edit - just as an aside, those pics on the auction are, to me, clearly not her pics just due to lack of background etc. Having looked at a lot of sales of various items, it's always clear if the pics are the item or pics are lifted.

What difference does it make that it was still a good deal?

She did not ship what she described and illustrated.

People use stock photos all the time, I have absolutely no issue with that if the item is in the condition described and what is sold is actually the item photographed.

This stuff is mass produced, if it saves a seller 5 minutes so they can post more d&d for us to buy... more power to them.

However, she provided a stock photo of the WRONG book.

She did not apologize for her error/mistake.

She was rude about it.

Ebay is a matter of trust.

She can't be trusted.

Buying from stock photos should not mean the seller can send us anything with the same title.  That's a pig in a poke.  Especially, if they are using the valuable first print photos for the listings.

Well, that is fair enough, I just think a neg is a little harsh. Don't think I would have reacted the same way, but you never know until you're in that position I guess..   :?

So are the markings and soiled areas particularly bad? Would you have bought them for $15 if they were described accurately? Interested in seeing what condition inside is, thats all.

They were a great buy anyway.  Clean and nice inside, etc.

However, she appears to have been comfortable using three stock photos... all of the wrong printing.

In addition, she is comfortable using stock photos and not noting the splattering on the cover of one of them, which you can see in my photo.

In addition, she is not sorry for here error and did not learn from it.
Instead, she responded rudely and is sorry that I am disappointed?
She indicated no awareness that she had done nothing wrong.\
She left several auctions running that likely have similar issues.

This leads me to believe she
Without remorse.
Will use the wrong photos again.
Will not note condition issues that should be noted.

These add up to shady to me.

possibly, or just bloody lazy and not understanding of the items she is selling..?

she is not making a profit out of it, but fair enough, best to highlight such sellers so others don't buy unreliable items from them.

I don't know that I would go as far as saying shady.  Lazy--yes, ignorant--yes, doesn't care--probably not.  Shady, it seems to me, should be reserved for those who are intentionally trying to deceive the buyer.  This seller probably wouldn't know a 1st print from a 50th print, nor does she even care.  Couple that with the fact that she is too lazy to take a picture of what is actually being sold and this is what happens.

Sometimes that's how ebay works.  When I buy on ebay things are usually what I expect.  Sometimes they are better than I expect and other times they're not.  Kind of tends to balance out in the end.

I will say this, had you bought this from a knowledgeable seller then by all means it's a shady deal.  Save this girl for the lazy/don't care thread.

Guys,
Stop nitpicking this... the seller is lazy and ignorant. THAT'S SHADY!

Regardless of the positive aspect of the items being under-priced... which is irrelevant. Her conduct should not be rewarded.

I'd have to agree with that, but as TheMilford says, it does deserve highlighting so others here don't get their fingers burnt. Although for $15...!
