Okay, even though I've been playing for a long time, I'm just starting getting back into collecting.  I've been playing 1st Ed AD&D with my kids (who are madly in love with it!).  The stuff I 'collect' will not be bagged and boarded, but also not thrown into a bookbag or read while eating Cheetos.  Print isn't important to me, as long as mods are mono.

Here's what I'm thinking...

Player's Handbook
Dungeon Master's Guide
Monster Manual
Deities and Demigods (Cthulhu)
Fiend Folio
MM 2
Unearthed Arcana

B1, B2.  C1.  D1, D2, D3.  G1, G2, G3.  S1, S3.  (I didn't like S2.)

Rogue's Gallery
Dungeon Master's Log
Pink Player Character Sheets
Permanent Player Character Sheets
NPC Character Sheets
DM Screen
World of Greyhawk (We're playing in my own world, but think this is a must have.)

That's pretty much it.  I know it isn't huge or deep, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.  Any suggestions or glaring ommisions?

Thanks!

All of you might enjoy some early issues of The Dragon.

Issues through 1982 are my personal favorites, and would probably augment your collection nicely.

I started a Dragon collection a couple of months ago and I've been pleasantly surprised at how many early issues are available.

Good luck,
Keith

You must include U1, U2 and U3. They are great simple modules and your kids will love them if you are just starting to introduce them to playing.

I recommend you add A1 (and then A2-4 if you like A1), S4, WG4, and WG5 (and Dungeon 112, Dungeon 124, and Dungeon 139 if you like WG5).

You could also drop:

Rogue's Gallery
Dungeon Master's Log
Pink Player Character Sheets
Permanent Player Character Sheets
NPC Character Sheets
DM Screen

None of those are necessary, IME (although I do use the DM Log, RG, DM Screen, and PC/NPC sheets, depending on the game/players---only the good ones get annotated into my log! :D ).

Gah! My favorite!

(It's okay, poor, unwanted White Plume Mountain: I still love you).

As far as what others have already mentioned, I'd second votes for the U series and the A series. The U's are full of atmosphere and some nice low-level action; the A's have a nice "we're on an important mission" feel to them. Both should go over well with children, I would guess.

Be careful with those modules (and periodicals!).  Once you start, you won't stop, unless you plan carefully ahead.  The "only monos" is a good way to curb the habit, but you may end up becoming a print run junkie, and that's just as bad.

Unless you're strongly opposed to S2, I suggest picking it up to complete the mono collection.  There's something very satisfying about completing a "set".

I'd suggest picking up the remainder of the "orange spines" unless you particularly hate some of them.  Also consider the geomorphs and/or monster and treasure assortments.  In your case, I'd go for the 1-3 compilations -- they seem to best match the other misc. stuff you've listed.

Great thread, by the way. :)

The problem with collecting is that it seldom lends itself to tight control.

Once you take the plunge you find yourself setting up snipes on things you already have or never knew existed...because the price is right or because someone else wants it.   :x

Don't feel too bad Xax, I love White Plume Mountain too.

You also might consider:

I7 - Can't go wrong with a spooky castle and a nasty vampire.
I1 - Great ruined city environment with lots of different types of encounters.
N2 - Low level, great story, kids will love it.

And all of these you should be able to pick up very cheap.

you dont like S2??!!! sacrilege!

you gotta get the GDQ series chummer....gotta finish it off doing Q1 :)

and of course the U series is an absolute must.

and sticking my neck out a little, i really like B3 and B4. i ran both of them, modified my own way, and they were superb adventures.

most of the above you can pick up quite easy and cheap, but for the G and D series, you should try and get the Mono's, as mentioned. they just have a much more satisfying feel about them.

you might also consider products by other companies too, such as Judges Guild. there is a bucket load of stuff by them which you can pick up quite cheap and there are some really cool items.

S4 and WG4 - Classic!

While you are at it, why don't you save yourself the trouble and just resign yourself to picking up all the letter series modules?

Hag, if cost is a factor, and you actually want to use the mods, I'd suggest color versions, not monos. The monos go for more.
You could get the compilation mods, like Desert of Desolation. Kills 2 birds with 5 stones.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

Sorry...S2 felt Grimtoothy/Arduinish to me....but S1 didn't.  wierd, I know.

Personally, I thought Q1 was dried dogsh!t, but might pick it up only for completeness sake.  If my kids actually go throught the G & D mods, I'll write my own Q1.

Spider/Egg ship, indeed.  :x

I am open to the U series, as the A series.

What I'll probably do is run them through B2 next, then the U series, then give them the option of some homegrown stuff of mine or A series until they can handle G series.

As far as mono's and such, I'd say I'm off to a good start

Thanks everyone...keep the suggestions coming!

I might pick up some Bard Games stuff...The Complete X stuff, as well as the Necronomicon.

I used to have some JG stuff, Dark Tower and Citystate.  Hmmmm.

Damn you people!

You and your kids might enjoy seeing the original three booklets in the OD&D white box set together with a copy of Supplement I, Greyhawk.

The combination of these 4 books shows how D&D changed from a derivative of a wargame to an actual RPG.

In a way, the OD&D books + Greyhawk look like a prototype for the AD&D books that followed (IMHO).
