There's a fair amount of artwork within Warriors of Mars, all of it bad.  As to his "inspiration", I'm inclined to believe he used the newspaper comics, since Marvel's run of John Carter of Mars didn't appear until well after Warriors of Mars went out of print in 1974.

When I have the inclination, I intend upon giving Warriors of Mars the "Bruce Mohler" treatment, turning it into a supplement for OD&D that has much better pictures. :)

I now see what you mean about the Bell "artwork".  8O
The drawing in the following link shows a remarkable lack of knowledge about basic anatomy....
I've never seen the interior art of WoM before (they sell beyond my budget).

speaking of that link - How long was that classified up before it was sold? Can't have been more than a couple of hours.

Who's going to fess up?!

(looks immaculate btw - a fine buy for the lucky guy who saw it first)

Edit - answered my own question - went up at 4.16 - I looked at 5.38.
50 Acaeum members have been signed in today - most recently it looks like Mike and Brian - the usual suspects if you will!!! (No offense gentlemen    )

I know Brian had one but forget if he sold it.  At $500+ I don't think it was Brian - he doesn't seem in hardcore collector mode these days.

I'm still looking for a copy but it wasn't me.

I agree that somebody really should alert Foulfoot.
I think this is an interesting tid bit that should maybe go up on the site with the Woodgrain history.  But that's just me.

Must've been a good investment back in the day for $5 its now going for 100 times it value...

Hmm, no, I don't have a gambling problem, I'm winning, and winning is not a problem. That's like saying Michael Jordan has a basketball problem, or Def Leppard has an awesomeness problem. So why don't y'all pour some sugar on that?

I'm still maintaining the opinion that it can't hold at $500.

It went very quickly, and a couple of heavy hitters contacted me after it had already sold to express regret they had not seen it earlier so it might have gone even higher if I had let it run as an auction.  Then again, this copy is probably the best one that's been out there on the recent market so we'll see what the next one brings in...

I was doing a little research on the old D&D artists, which led me to this thread, which in turn led me to this discovery (scanned from my own copies)-

ImageImageImage

What's funny about this is that it comes from the same issue of Strange Tales that the Dr. Strange swipe comes from! The Bell image is on the second to last page of Book 3, with the caption "Fight On!"

I'm on the hunt for other Bell swipes, as well. If anybody has a scan of any of the other TSR stuff he did, especially Warriors of Mars, I'd love to see it, if possible.

Thanks and enjoy. :)

welcome to the Acaeum Oculus Orbus.
Nice find!
Looks like Bell didn't look very far for "inspiration".  :D

Marvel apparently has some sort of digital initiative underway for their comic books; anyone know if the Dr. Strange issue in question is available as such?  It would be a lot easier to get that issue and compare it to WoM than to scan WoM and provide it to someone who has that issue.

Or at least that's my hunch :D

It would be if I had a copy of WoM to look at (hint hint).
