The administrator of the Strange Discussions forum (docstrange.com) was kind enough to answer a question for me about the image used on the cover of the early printings of D&D.
He indicates that the image is from Strange Tales #167 (April 1968), page 11, panel 2 drawn by Dan Adkins.

I have taken the liberty of posting the image he provided to photobucket to avoid using his bandwidth.

That's a great find.  I've wanted to see the original image ever since I learned that Greg Bell had copied it from a comic.

Thanks, I have been wanting to see it also and was surprised to see how close the image matches.

Is this information that should be listed with the OD&D entry?
It might be nice if somebody can get their hands on a copy of that comic and take a color scan to use.
I see several listings on eBay for that issue, but if anybody has a neighborhood comic store they might be able to find it cheaper.
I sold off my comic collection several years ago and although I did have quite a few Dr. Strange iems my spreadsheet tells me that I never had that issue.

Well, it's cheaper than buying a woodgrain box, anyway.  I'm definitely hitting the comic book stores on the way home. :)

Well, I needed that issue anyway . . . I normally wouldn't spend $6 plus shipping for a single VG Strange Tales, but I'll chalk it up to research.   :D



I'll donate a nice color pic once I get it.

strange tales 167 is already considered a classic due to the steranko american flag cover! This is great! Strange tales are some of the most unjderrated comics of the 1960's! I'll have to open up my pristine copy and take a look at the pic myself! I can post a scan if you like but it looks like beyond the breach has it covered!

Makes me wonder what other sources Greg Bell used in his artwork.  Especially the artwork for Warriors of Mars.

He made almost no effort to alter the image enough with some respect to the original artist. Most all artists borrow from others to a certain degree. To copy something so closely would suggest the draftsman had little to no confidence in his abilities to attempt to make his own images. Because of this, I would say it is very likely he copied most of his other work directly from other sources.

I have only ever seen pictures of the cover of WoM.
Is there a lot of Greg Bell artwork inside? If he was "inspired" by a Marvel comic perhaps there were other instances of the same "inspiration".

Is there any history on Greg Bell and what he went on to after his work for TSR?
