If it could be shown that there was criminal negligence, people would indeed go to jail for this, as well as possibly conspiracy to commit a felony or whatever the hell its called (I dunno all the legal jumbo...) and I think that would be good. "Infrastructure" is supposed to work, that's why it is what it is... and for too long have some said "We've got the best in the world." Yep... I bet we do.

Things like this should never happen when it comes down to maintenance and inspection.

I thought I recognized the name.  I remember it from watching the movie The Mothman Prophecies.  Very strange movie if I recall.  Richard Gere...boring as ever.  :P

Yep, The movie is based on the actual events that took place around Point Pleasant, WV in 68'
That bridge had been inspected a year before the accident iirc.

Hmm, no, I don't have a gambling problem, I'm winning, and winning is not a problem. That's like saying Michael Jordan has a basketball problem, or Def Leppard has an awesomeness problem. So why don't y'all pour some sugar on that?

I hang out a bit on yog-sothoth.com - which is a great site.  But even for their high standards, this is an absolutely fascinating thread...

It is on whether you can survive in space without a spacesuit.  And since I know that you are all geeks at heart - here it is.

Sadly, my dissertation has to be in by the 30th.  That is why I am wasting so much time here.  Displacement activity I believe it is called.  :D

Hopefully off to gencon Next Year

Take your credit card - you never know, perhaps your good intentions, the auction will throw up something interesting...

Has there been a 'preview' of stuff for sale - like last year?

Oh, be sure to take loads of pics - be interesting to see the Acaeum lot all crowded together.  Perhaps of the dinner (although at that time frankly it is more of a late lunch   ) or the auction.  Hell, even at a game  :D

I was wondering when someone was going to mention the Mothman!  I was deliberately not bringing him up.

I saw The Mothman Prophecies a few years ago.

I thought it was a scary film...psychological drama.

When you watch with Tivo, you can go back to see the many frames in which the director hides scary images...barely on screen for a second, yet you say, "Did I see that?"

Scariest moment in the movie:

Richard Gere is standing at the mirror in his hotel room.  He is looking at a picture of his dead wife, taped to the mirror.  Gere stops....looks in the mirror...turns and looks behind him....clearly searching for the presence he has sensed in the room with him.

No, it was not a moment that included severed heads or a dumbass skeleton or yet another psycho killer or any of the other crap that scares teenage girls.  :pukel:  It was just a common experience of feeling frightened for no apparent reason...and we know exactly what Gere is feeling.  Gave me the creeps.

I've replayed it with Tivo a few times...there is nothing hidden in the frame.  It's just that sense....that there's someone there.  Brilliant.

Sure, if archeologists can lead lives of danger & adventure, why not game collectors? Apparently you've been pursuing tales of a rare orange B3 hidden in a desert tomb guarded by efreets.

Try using one of the experimental Nazi flying-wing planes, just watch out for the propellers [& rival collectors].

Ok, admittedly, I'm a Dallas Cowboy homer....

But did anyone else tear up a little at WR Michael Irvin's Hall of Fame acceptance speech?

Just watched a re-broadcast on TV tonight.  Man, that had to be one of the most honestly heartfelt speeches ever.  Didn't offer any excuses, didn't apologize, just asked for forgiveness...and told his two sons to be better men and fathers than he was.

My brother mentioned while we were watching it "Funny thing is, don't you think fans of the Bears (Tank Johnson), Titans (Pacman Jones), and Falcons (Michael Vick) wished they had athletes that ONLY were caught with hookers and dope?" Nowadays Irvin's off the field stuff is pretty tame....who wouldn't take dope smoking over owning an unregistered arsenal of handguns (Johnson), shooting up strip clubs (Jones), and running dogfighting rings (Vick)???  Oh hell I even forgot about Chris Henry (Bengals) and his series of problems with alchohol and underage women.  Irvin's "troubles" look positively quaint now.....

And for all you Cowboys fans, all the signs in training camp point to the defense being a MONSTER this year....Every day it's becoming more and more obvious Parcells didn't have a clue about the 3-4, and Wade Phillips is going to do his magic (every defense he's ever coached as been in the top ten in the league) and get these guys rolling. There is going to be huge things ahead for Demarcus Ware, Roy Williams, and the rest when Phillips lets them loose....

BTW The first ever Cowboys QB "Dandy" Don Meredith was honored at the HOF dinner as an honorary member in their broadcaster wing. Who can forget the dozen years of him, Cosell and Gifford changing the entire way football was broadcast?  I remember being allowed to stay up way past my bedtime when the Cowboys played a Monday night game, and the repartee between Don and Howard was just legendary.  Sadly, Don is a bit a recluse now, and supposedly it's from a lot of memory loss (not unusual for football players of an earlier era when equipment and medical advice was more primitive).  It's a damn shame the state of the NFL compensation system for past football players---basically, they aren't allowed to declare disability as a result of playing football, as the NFL fights every case tooth and nail....like it wasn't because of the 20 or so concussions they had on the field they have memory loss, it would have happened anyway....   Anyway it was good to see Meredith still healthy and telling the jokes, and singing "Turn out the lights..."
