Anyway, it should be interesting to see how this plays out in the U.S., which (just stating a simple fact here; no offense intended) is still home to the vast majority of eBay users worldwide.

My initial take: it won't be that big of a deal. But any system that hurts Cougie â€” and this one should â€” is okay by me.

Regarding the Iraq Con,

I emailed SPC Amberson and he confirmed the address:

I used a couple "flat rate" boxes today which each held 5 or 6 books (in bubble wrap). Each flate rate USPS box costs $8.10.

You have to fill out a customs form at the post office, before you go to the counter. I just called them "books" and gave the total box a value of $10.

Hope they bring many rewarding adventures and experience!

Does anybody have any tips on taking photos of miniatures? or can point me in the direction of info? Unfortunately I only have a cheap Kodak digital 3.1 MP camera (Easyshare C300) so it does not have all the "Macro" features of the more expensive SLR cameras.

While going through more boxes today I started finding some of my old miniatures including a small bunch of 1979 Ral Partha's.

I played around with my camera to see if I could get a half decent picture but the minis kept coming out as little lead colored blurs...

My next step is to try the tripod and see if I can use the zoom feature to get a clearer image... Once more into the breach!! (nothing funny intended BTB

)

Well, according to our good friend Cougar, you just throw the damn thing on a scanner and press the big green button.

Oh, wait, you meant serious advice, right?

Okay, my two cents: if your camera does not have some sort of specific ultra-zoom feature, it's not going to turn out well ... you're just going to get a vaguely-miniature-like blob.

Even if you do have an ultra-zoom feature, you still need lots of good natural light and a clutter-free background. Mini's are a pain ...

I experimented some more this afternoon trying various combinations of zooms, lighting and shooting ranges but, alas, 'twas all in vein...

As far as the Cougiescanner techniques, I think I'll choose to pass them by...

I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300 on it's "Macro" setting and have been able to get some amazing pictures of my painted miniatures using only a standard light and white posterboard behind it.

On eBay right now, you can buy a NEW Coolpix 4300 with a special macro lens and adapter for $89.95 buy-it-now...

You can then zoom in on the pics and manipulate them in Photoshop (or any other cheap image editor).

Thanks guys! Looks like good advice and both links confirm what I had been thinking while trying to squeeze a little more performance from my low end Kodak digital camera.

It looks like I will eventually have to spend some money on an SLR digital camera. Until then I'll just put the mini's back in the box where I found them and list them on eBay down the road.

I have all that macro camera stuff in 35 mm for an older camera with handheld light meter etc. but I do like the instant results that a digital camera provides.

One more question...
Does any of you that sell minis have an opinion on whether it is more profitable to see them as singles or as small groups? (four at a time perhaps?) All I have are older minis mainly Ral Partha from the late 70's and some from the early 80's.

Hi Jason

I'm a buyer, not a seller, but my sense is that selling them in your eBay store singly or in pairs is the way to do it, unless the minis are very common or originally came as sets.

Selling them as singles is slow, but you can often get $4 or $5 for a relatively common single mini that way.

eBay listings

Definitely sell the rare or more collectible ones (e.g. monsters, pre-slotta Citadels) as singles.

On the other hand, common figs like Grenadier AD&D Gold PC races don't often fetch high prices except as sets with their original boxes.
