Every news website will have the story (CNN, MSNBC, CBS, Fox News, etc).

Horrible and sickening story ... don't really know what else to say.

Yep...scary shit.  Makes you wonder just what the person went through to make them kill 30 people and injure 30 more with no thoughts of remorse or pity.  I think I am going to move out of the city to the mountains and become a hermit.  At least then I wont have to worry about getting shot by a co-worker because I drank the last cup of coffee and forgot to brew some more.  :?

After reading this I wondered what could possibly be done to stop stuff like this from happening.  Take away all the guns and people will just use knives.  Then I remembered the movie Equilibrium.  Remove violent thoughts by using chemicals to supress emotions.  Destroy all books, art, music and other external stimuli as well.

Then I thought:  Books + Art = D&D.  Bad idea.

The term "psychotic break" comes to mind.

What is more worrisome is the line in the CNN story that says that two handguns were found, implying that no other weapons were used.  I hope that no one ever skillfully uses an assault rifle to take the body count to 50 or 100 . . . but publicity brings out the copycats.

Time for all us Texans to get our permits...my wife and I have been putting it off.  Always love the stories when normal people turn the table on the scumbags and are saved as a result of having a concealed weapon.  In a perfect world, the bad guys wouldn't have them...in this world, I'd rather be prepared. And I don't know how much good my handgun is going to do against the inevitable heavily armed freak JG mentions.

Last post from me on this subject.  CNN has profiles of some of the dead.  Even allowing for inaccuracy and embellishment, one stands out:

Liviu Librescu, 76, was a Holocaust survivor, who his son said, will be remembered as a hero. He "blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee," Joe Librescu told AP. "Students started opening windows and jumping out." The elder Librescu, a professor at Virginia Tech, was recognized internationally for his research in aeronautical engineering, the head of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Tech told AP. He was born and received his advanced degrees in Romania.

There could hardly be a more stark contrast of personalities between that guy and the sick bastard that killed him.

I wish that I could write the words that describe what I feel right now when stuff like this happens(and the others like Columbine), but I just can't.   I think that I could probably write a 900 page book about it and I still don't think I could accurately convey all that I feel right now, it just wouldn't do it justice.

I thought that the quote on CNN from a friend of one of the victims was apt...

After the  9/11 attacks her mother told her:  "The devil is real."

"But I have watched the dragons come, fire-eyed, across the world."

Reluctant as I am to point this out (being a Canadian in Berkeley and all) the choice of instrument  does matter.  It's pretty hard for one guy, no matter how psychotic, to kill 32 people with a knife.

Let's just hope that the guy was not into role playing games...
Wouldn't that lead to a world class shi*storm!

If he were still alive I'd like to hear you tell that to Jim Bowie.

The point I was trying to make was basically that no matter what steps are taken to curb violence people are still going to kill each other.  If the guy had majored in chemistry instead of english he could have cooked up a batch of chlorine or mustard gas and killed countless more people that way instead of using a gun.

Just curious...what does being Canadian and attending Berkeley have to do with your reluctance to discuss the subject?

Canadian + Berkeley = endlessly tolerant and liberal, in the minds of many.

Maybe he was anticipating being categorized and dismissed as such.

You just put your finger on it, bombadil!

But yeah, I wouldn't trust those chem majors farther than I can throw them.
