True...it's just the person who influenced history the most during that year.  However, after the Khomenii debacle, Time had to rethink their selections. Anyone who lived in that time in history might remember hundreds if not thousands of Iranian students, on TV every night on Nightline screaming insanely, holding up Time magazine covers with pictures of the Ayatollah on them, and basically thinking America was honoring the man (since a lot of them couldn't read English it was a logical assumption). I think Time knew that although they did the "right" thing, they act was being interpreted wrongly by a vast section of the Middle East.  Ever since then, the choice IMO has been relatively benign, sometimes even stupid (the choice of Computer, You, and even Putin this year...)

BTW, off topic, but that wiki article was one of the worst written EVER.  More speculation and unconfirmed citations that in a Cougie listing.  Seems to be my main problem with Wiki nowadays, is the slipshod, half ass bullshit in a lot of the entries I've looked up.  As if people are just trying to boost their totals by writing ANYTHING in the definitions, figuring someone will come along later to correct it.

Funny that "Liberal Media" doesn't make the laws, the two houses of the Congress and the President do. And here I was thinking that the Republicans were the ones who controlled both houses of the Congress for the 12 years consecutively going until the start of 2007 and the White House for the last 7  .  Damn, I knew I must have been having a nightmare.  Maybe it was the "Liberal Media" controlled state goverments then...

I suppose technically yes, but in reality politicians don't actually write the laws but rather unelected bureaucrats. They don't even read the laws. Of course, it probably wouldn't help either because the laws are so complex. For instance, the tax code alone is 60,000 pages... 60,000! Because government is so large politicians need to delegate most of their responsibility to others (notably the formation of government agencies).

And you mean to say Republicans aren't liberal? They spend as much as the Democrats and, like Democrats, have a terrible record on furthering individual liberty (drugs laws, censorship, military adventurism, etc).

1967: Liberal media does not exist (at least not in huge numbers) and Hollywierd has not yet taken over the hearts and minds of all of the family members. Kids would actually prefer to spend free time outside playing with friends, using thier imaginations to make up games, rather than sitting in front of the TV, or playing video games. And those Kids can still play in the neighborhood without too much concern for safety, other than the occasional skinned knee. Not many gang wars going on in the urban settings yet, though the biggest cities are already suffering from them.

2007: Liberal media is at its height. Current fashion is that everyone should be able to do as they please with little or no consequenses. Just knowing they've done wrong is punishment enough. Let the crimnals go free to terrorize YOUR neighborhood. The libs also try desperately and almost constanlty to take the sheeples guins away. Of course knowing full well that then only cirminals will have guns. After all, those crimnals seldom if ever venture into the rich upperclass areas which is where the libs live. So the cirminals go to the middle class areas so only the sheeple need fear them.

The media being liberal (which it is by almost any measure) isn't really the main driver of social change.

The biggest reason for these laws is that, due to FDR, the federal government has gotten involved in areas where it has no traditional (if not, constitutional) role: education, health, transportation, energy, et al. Heck, run off any department you can think of. This "socialization" has slowly eradicated the need for taking responsibility for one's actions, and has fostered a greater faith in social engineering. This belief has now permeated pretty much through all policy making institutions.

Also, the growth of government has coincided (if not partly caused) a slow secularization of America. The decline of the church has reduced the level of social capital in society, fostering all kinds of social pathologies like crime, mistrust, drug use, depression, etc.

Bottom line: more people are inclined to do socially destructive things, and American society is much more willing to limit individual rights so that this doestn't happen.

I thought this was the football thread?

We need to get back on it here. I'll start: Giants by 3. Like Joe Namath, I'll guarantee it.

Unless they lose ... in which case, I'll use the "edit" function.

You have to define media.

Anytime there has been a poll of PRINT media members, they come about pretty strongly Democrat (around 80%). However, you can skew those numbers the other way if you are referring to RADIO media (thus the domination of the airwaves by conservative talk show hosts).  When you talk TELEVISION, results have been mixed.  A lot of it depends on what part of the country you are in, who owns the station, is it local or national, etc. I don't think there would be any arguement a large segment of the national nightly news people are liberal (i.e., I don't think that Katy Couric votes Republican....CERTAINLY Dan Rather didnt!!!!   )  However, I would have to say some of the local news stations are highly conservative in their news coverage...which you would expect, as Texas leans way right for the most part. Of course this also assumes if you vote Democrat you are liberal, etc.

I think some misconceptions occur because actors and the Hollywood types overwhelmingly support Democrats and Liberal condidates...and since they are stars, they get inordinate amounts of time onscreen to promote their ill informed ideas and theories (not all political).  It makes a lot of media look "liberal" when it's really not....it's the Hollywood type that's being reported on.  Also, some huge daily papers (notably the New York and LA Times) and proudly and avowedly liberal in tone, which tends to weight heavily on a lot of minds who track these things...

There's a ball game tomorrow?  Oh, that's right, the Mavs play the Pistons at noon!  Great!

Looks like the Chinese really need to work on their infrastructure a bit:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22978449/?GT1=10856

I wonder just how many Chinese people will perish just because they aren't able to warm their houses or are stuck on an icy road in the middle of freaking nowhere?  I'll bet none of those vehicles have OnStar either.

That's a cop out. If you can't defend a position through an intelligent conversation, don't feign amazement with me.

Interestingly, here is something a Nader supporter came up with last election cycle:

You know, the Texas guys might make fun of my home (and sometimes even make me cry), but you have to admit it's pretty cool to be able to jump in the car, zip down to the closest sportsbook, and place a legal Super Bowl bet just a few minutes before kickoff.

I know that's no big deal for the UK guys (my understanding is you can't swing a dead cat in London without hitting a bookie's**) and maybe even the Aussies, but here in the (hypocritical) U.S., it's still only a legal proposition in the great state of Nevada.

**The main reason I'm a great admirer of UK culture. That and pubs that serve breakfast. Oh, and newstands ... actual newstands. (news agents, you call them?)

I'm torn whether I'd be losing money, or losing a lot of money, or losing all my money if I had the ability to place a legal bet here at any time.... 8O
