I received this e-mail today.  Very sad news.  She was only a member here briefly, but contributed a good deal (some of which has already been put into the next site update).  Our condolences to her family, and are thoughts are with them.

Hello to all that are receiving this message, my name is Susie and I was Llaurenela's friend from the time we were toddlers growing up next door to each other. I do apologize for not sending this sooner, but I was not able to handle doing it any sooner that this. I am the executor of her estate and I am carrying out her instructions concerning her online D&D relationships. I am sending this out by BCC to all of the people who have emailed her since she left the internet.

Firstly, Llaurenela passed away of cancer on December 27, 2006 after a long painful battle, after she achieved her wish of celebrating Christmas with her family and friends. She used minimal pain killers up until the end so that she could be lucid and present. She insisted on making the most of what life she had left.

Her first name was Stephanie and Llaurenela was her middle name. Her maiden name and her married name remain private to protect the privacy of her family, especially her sons. Zrenlician was her families name in the old country and like many familes who fled for their lives when they came here, they changed it when they came to the US.

She sends her love to her friends on the internet, at Knights & Knaves, Grognards Tavern, Delvers Dungeon, StoneGiants Cave, Acaeum Forums, Pied Piper and a select few at Dragonsfoot. Col_Pladoh, JR Mapes, Sieg, oldschooler , Wilowisp, Solomoriah, Zane, Clangador, PapersAndPaychecks, grodog, Ivid, Mythmere, Finarvyn, havard, Gutboy Barrelhouse, Sean the Stonegiant, MajorKookie, and many many others too numerous to mention. Please do not feel slighted if you are not mentioned here.

She sends her forgiveness to her enemies Egg of Coot, Handy Haversack, JF, Alex, Aranion, Gnarly Bones, KewlMarine32, Evreaux, Halaster Blackcloak, Wycked Grinn and the like. She wants you to know that she forgives you for harrassing her and running her off of Dragonsfoot. She also forgives Samwise, he knows what for.

As for the posts that she deleted off of Dragonsfoot, those are on her hard drive. I will try to locate them and zip file them. Once I have done that in the next couple of months, I will email them to anyone who has requested them.

As for her projects on Knights and Knaves. Anyone is welcome to add to them there and anyone is welcome to use them on any other site, except Dragonsfoot, with her full blessing.

I will close with her favorite quotes:

Beauty is power; a smile is its sword.
The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose.
Beauty is in the heart of the beholder.

Sincerely,
Susie

Hey Foul, not to be insensitive, but that letter you have recieved I am fairly certain is pure BS, I am sorry to say.  It has become widely known over on Dragonsfoot that the same poster who posted over there as Llauranella also posted under the ID of tgamemaster1975 and is now also posting again over there under the name of Crimhthan_The_Great.  I fear that the letter that you have received is an effort to help cover these facts up. Let me just say its not pretty. :?

That is absolutely shameful that someone would play on emotions like that just to get attention :(

After spending *far* too much time looking into this than I wanted to, I'm afraid I must disagree that it's a fake.  Or rather, I have absolutely no idea whether the story is fake or not, but I'm not particularly sold on the idea that there's multiple identities of Llaurenela over at Dragonsfoot.

Not to drag that whole drama on to *this* board (for chrissakes, for Dragonsfoot being a moderated board, there's more off-topic discussions going on than there are on-topic ones, IMHO).  From what I read there, several moderators were casting suspicions that Llaurenela was posting with a different ID.  One poster (not a moderator) claimed that the IP addresses of the accounts were the same, along with "posting styles and signatures".

Personally, I didn't see any damning evidence that posting styles, or phrases, were similar, and I read quite a few posts from both individuals.  On a phpBB forum, moderators cannot see IP addresses, only admins can.  And the admin of Dragonsfoot has stated that the accounts are not originating from the same IP, and that as far as he's concerned, the persons are not the same.

Bereft of tangible evidence, I'm inclined to leave this e-mail here.  I feel sorry for the family if the e-mail is true, and even sorrier for Llaurenela if the e-mail is false.  Let's not cast aspersions on a whim here, as the embarrassment suffered if those aspersions are wrong *far* outweighs the embarrassment if they're right.

Best to leave it here just in case. I would like to point out, though, that the e-mail names Susie as executor of the estate, but her husband is still alive, according to the e-mail, therefore, there is no "estate".

I don't know about the US, but here in the UK a person's IP address is no indication of whether or not they are the same as another user. My IP address changes every time I log onto the internet, and I keep the pink warning box at the top of your website just to remind me.

I am presently on 81.77.X.X. An hour ago I was on 91.32.X.X.

<EDIT> Just logged back on. Now I'm on 84.68.X.X. Does the X.X indicate numbers that do not change?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

At first glance, I'm thinking that your service provider own the blocks from 81.77.x.x to 91.32.x.x and is dynamically assigning you a new IP address each time you reboot your machine/redial-up/restart your high-speed.

In an attempt to oversimplify IP addresses . . .

IP addresses range from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 and all values in-between.  Think of them as a postal code --- the further to the right one goes, the closer to the machine one gets.  Blocks of IP addresses are assigned or bought by groups, so your provider can be tracked down.

The actual IP address that the Internet sees is the IP address of the computer accessing the Internet.  Those who are at work now (like, ummm, me) are going through a Proxy Server that does the actual connecting to the Internet; my local IP address is hidden.

To further confuse the issue, IPv4 is the current standard; IPv6 may or may not become widespread in the future.

Probably. It's Orange Broadband in the UK. It must make it harder for the police to track online offenders. Previously, with my old dial-up connection, I always had the same IP. I probably shared it with 1000 other people, but at least the police would have been able to get a list of perp's in a single area served by a particular IP address.

Now I suppose Orange would just tell the police a perp' could be any one of their 1.5M customers in the UK.

Orange. Doing their bit to promote crime and pornography online.

Man, this is some weird shit.

My guess, the person behind the forum id has let that id pass away, treating it just the same as if it were a living, breathing person.

The need for attention and sympathy can drive people to extremes.  I'm not asserting that's the case here, but it could be.

I am saddened to read this.  I suspect that Llaurenela put me on the "good" list because I am among those who tried to convince her to stay with us at DF.  She was, in part, responsible for the creation of the Workshop forum, and I have lurked at K&K a few times reading her ideas.

FoulFoot, you make some accusations that I will respond to briefly.

We also create more high quality, old-school-compatible free game material available than anyone else I know of.  It works for me.  It's why I tried to convince Llaurenela to stay on.

Not true.  You should know that phpBB systems are very flexible and configurable.  DF mods can, indeed, see IP addresses of posters.  We can even see members who are logged in hidden.

Again, I'm sorry to hear about this.  Llaurenela was an imaginative person.  She will be missed.

I'm not convinced. Scan in the death certificate and show us.
ISP's use CIDR addressing (subnetting) to filter a crapload of hosts through a small range of IP's. However, they almost invariably sets the DHCP lease time to a week or more, otherwise the network would be carrying renewal requests far more often than necessary for devices which are usually on. If you have cable or DSL, your modem is the item that leases the IP address from the ISP's DHCP server(s), not your PC itself. The ISP filters hosts via MAC address, which is why you need to let the ISP know if you get a new modem.
Blah blah blah.
The point is, if the mods said the connections came from the same address, it is 99.99731% certain it was the same modem. I find it impossible to believe the lease expired and was picked up by another DF user. The odds are roughly equivalent to Halle Berry knocking on your door and offering to blow you on the crapper while you eat pepperoni pizza and guzzle Heinekens, with Thundarr the Barbarian playing on a 50" plasma TV six feet in front of you.
Not that I've ever envisioned that.

Without going into specific details and not contradicting my earlier post in this thread, new information about this situation has been discovered, so I would like to add that there may be a parts to this story that are both untold and perhaps even more troubling and sad than I had originally anticipated.  At this point though, it really is unclear as to what the real truth of this all is and so I agree with Foul's notion to leave the sleeping dog lie and let the email stand on its own merits.

I am sorry for speaking so cryptically, but I feel that its in the best interest of everyone that without knowing the full truth, that it is best if we handle this situation as it stands and not to pursue digging any further.

Aside, both Evreaux and Solomoriah are good people and their opinions are always both well thought out and come from an honest and well meaning perspective.

Well, there's just no way that this development ends well. Either this woman is dead before her time, which would be tragic, or else this is some sort of elaborate joke or game ... which would be unspeakable.

Bad mojo either way.

Agreed completely.  No matter what, someone comes out of this shamefaced.  At best.

I could have sworn I remember Llaurenela mentioning she was divorced DL, I might be wrong though its been a while. I always liked Lady L. Never did understand the reason she left DF but I was pretty busy at that time so I missed the reason.

Yeah but cmon Sol its does get a little more than crazy there at times. Having to wade through 8 - 10 OT topics just to find one that actually deals with the game can be annoying. But you guys do put some of the best work out there. So get L4 released already would you!!!!
