I mean, think about it, over the years that's a hell of a lot of rpg material.

I am sure a majority of it came from buying stuff up on Ebay.  If you look at his previous incarnations you can see a pretty steady pattern of buying to go along with his thefts.

Well, you and I can.  But if he's not smart enough to change the backdrop on his photos, he's probably not up to the task.

Recording address information is always a useful.  If you can obtain the cooperation of their ISP, the evidence is rather compelling once both sets of logs are matched...

To make matters worse, there is hacker style software available for an unscrupulous user to forge their MAC address.
Very true.  However, in the case of eBay you're looking to achieve two-way communication.  Forging an address would be pointless.

You are quite correct.  :)  I didn't think that one all the way through!  :oops:
MAC address forging in this particular instance would be useless.

I still do not think that eBay would ever block somebody by using the MAC address. If the computer (or network card) was sold then eBay could potentially incur support costs from a buyer/seller who was trying to use their new (used) computer and was being blocked by eBay.

MAC addresses (and IP's for that matter) can be easily spoofed.

He/she/they probably think Brian's just another voice in their computer. Trying to get them to give up the 'good life' (dark side).

You're right, of course they wouldn't.  It's not sufficient on it's own.  However, if they were smart/organized/bclarkiesque they can use that supplementary info to assist in identifying a problematic individual's pattern, and once established, re-ban that individual much faster.  ;)

In a similar fashion, Microsoft currently "identifies" computers based on a points-based hardware profile.  If you change too much of your hardware and attempt to reinstall/re-activate a modern version of Windows, you'll need to give them a call and convince them it's the same machine, or your Windows installation will break in 30 days.

How would Ebay even know what an end user's MAC address is?  Wouldn't it be dropped when the packet leaves the local network and that layer of packet encapsulation is dropped?

Speaking of which, I've got to go drop an encapsulated packet myself...

It has been a long time since I did any work or reading about the specifics of the transport layer protocols, but I thought that the MAC info was used when routing return packets? Anyway, this is not a tech forum so this is my last post about this particular topic!   :oops:

You're correct.  However, a surprisingly number of applications like to place MAC and/or IP addresses within the data for tracking purposes.  But enough about that, we're supposed to be talking about shady dealers, not the shady application developers.

Wow, he's gone NARU on us already! :)

I've honestly lost count: how many times has this clown gone down in flames? Is it five? I can only remember three for sure:

*the original JonB;
*Eastern Treasure Chest;
*Games Emporium (or something similar to that).

Has there been two more after that? Three more? Is anyone keeping a scorecard? :)
