When I bought my Metzer basic and expert sets back in the 80's, both came with a light blue
d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4 and in one instance an extra red d10 and in the other an extra dark blue d10.

The presence of a d10 dates the dice to slightly later in the early era than the Holmes basic set.
Early gamers were able to use a
d20 as a d10.
Hell, early gamers were also able to roll a
d20 twice in order to get a d100 result.
The presence or lack of two
d20's in a box can date the set to late or early in the 78-81 era. A d10 usually means post-1980.
I have always assumed that the presence of chits in place of dice indicates 1977 or earlier.
One of my younger gamers recently questioned the use of a d20 as a d10...he was suspicious that the odds were different somehow.
