Excellent, thanks. They seem like a nice chocalately brown. At this point I've got a pair of blue sets, a brown set, and a yellow set. Therefore I need red, green, and white.

That looks like the brown color I remember. I'd be interested in a loose set if any one has one (opened, not in plastic, that is).

I have a story regarding those dice. My friend who had that set was DMing while we were riding around with his dad, in his brown Suburu, running errands. The dice were on the dashboard and several went flying out the window on a sharp turn. We had to dodge traffic in a busy intersection to retrieve them. We found some but not all of them. I guess BADD was right, D&D can be dangerous...

[quote="NetRodent"]

When I bought my Metzer basic and expert sets back in the 80's, both came with a light blue d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4 and in one instance an extra red d10 and in the other an extra dark blue d10.

The presence of a d10 dates the dice to slightly later in the early era than the Holmes basic set.

Early gamers were able to use a d20 as a d10.

Hell, early gamers were also able to roll a d20 twice in order to get a d100 result.

The presence or lack of two d20's in a box can date the set to late or early in the 78-81 era.  A d10 usually means post-1980.

I have always assumed that the presence of chits in place of dice indicates 1977 or earlier.

One of my younger gamers recently questioned the use of a d20 as a d10...he was suspicious that the odds were different somehow.

Check out this auction...won recently be an Acaeum member:

** expired eBay auction **

Look at the picture of the dice in this first printing (likely) Holmes Basic Set.

The listing says that the dice are the original dice...but I find that unlikely.

Still...look at the dice in the plastic bag...

It looks like the original dice are in the bag, although mixed with several other non-original.

Well, I'll know soon enough - just got an email this morning from the seller saying that they'll be shipping it today or tomorrow.  There do look to be more than the usual amount of dice in there, though.

(I think it's a 2nd printing, not 1st, as the seller claims that the release date is 1978...)

It should be a 2nd print, the box has the 1001 code.

I was trying to decipher that code, as I didn't see it mentioned in the description. Still can't make out 1001....but there doesn't seem to be enough to make it F115-R.

Edit *** found seller added to description at bottom...

this is a good thread...

Needs more pictures!

is there anyway to post permalinks for some of these auctions?

I'd love to see what you're all talking about.

I'll try to post some of my vintage dice soon.
