Anyone have a feel for how common these are?

I'd never even seen one before auction link

Must be fairly uncommon - I just checked my archived scans and out of around 20 different copies, none had the "Gold" TSR logo.  Neither of my two personal copies have it either.

FWIW, I've never seen one either.

I'm pretty sure I have one with that logo. I'll double check tonight.

My copy states 12th print, October 1991.

Let me know if that one is the same

Interesting to see an Unearthed Arcana with a 2nd Edition type logo.

I mean...given that Unearthed Arcana was the grenade that devastated 1st Edition and morphed it into 2nd Edition.

That's amazing that UA was still being printed at that date. I wonder what the size of the print runs was.

Actually is it a much better binding then the earlier printings?

The binding of my new Unearthed Arcana is constructed differently than the older style. It hasn't seen any use though,(and likely never will) so I can't tell if it's better.

I have loose sheets of parchment that have better binding that UA and MM2, so it doesn't surprise me that the later UA printings improved in that regard ;)

My copy of UA has held up wonderfully. I should check and see what printing it might be.

Unearthed Arcana was a hugely influential AD&D book.  It altered the entire game structure.

I'm surprised it isn't talked about more...either beloved or despised.

Howdy,

I despise the book. I burn one every year as a Yule log.

In my book, it broke the back of AD&D. Indeed, it gave us the Driz'zt Do'Urden anti-archetype. Then it was the slippery slope the rest of the way to 3E - where the anti-archetype IS the archetype.

Oh, it is...in the Dragonsfoot 1E AD&D forum. See for instance:
Complete Beginning Magic User Spell Table Including UA list
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21360

Paladins in a UA Hybrid
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21384

[UA] Elven rangers
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21327

Etc...these are just a few random threads I saw. There's a lot more in other threads on any number of topics.

Here at Acaeum, I don't think it is much discussed because of the relative lack of collectability - at least until this new printing was 'discovered'. Also, for some of us, like me, it's at the tail end of my interest in the TSR products.

I posted this on DF once:
Of the orange-spined manuals, I've gotten rid of the Manual of the Planes, Greyhawk Adventures, Dragonlance Adventures, Oriental Adventures and the Wilderness Survival Guide, but I've kept Unearthed Arcana, Monster Manual II and the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide. I've also kept the early five (non-orange spined).

I like the presentation of the 'Underdark' as provided by these three manuals. MMII gives us monsters like aboleth, duergar, derro, cloakers etc; UA gives us duergar, drow and svirfneblin as PCs (what, no underground halflings?); and DSG gives the outline of the underground setting. While I am not a fan of the Easley covers, there's enough old school art in each manual to make them interesting. DSG has a few great David Sutherland pieces (any one know if this the last book to have his artwork?), plus I generally like the other interior artwork; UA has a bunch of Roslof drawings; and MMII has a plethora of Holloway (a bit a too much, though) and some Sutherland.

Actually, a modified DSG wherein the MMII monsters and the PC races from UA were included would have been ideal.

In comparison, WSG was just plain boring.

Edit: I looked on Pen & Paper database, and Sutherland was an Interior Artist on a few later products (e.g. 2E Handbook) although he mostly did cartography in the later 80's.

Now, I say: why not Kuo-toa as a PC race?  Or Jermalaine?

On the other hand, I'm still tempted to get rid of it sometimes (much like Paul) - to get back to the purity of the five non-orange-spined books (the unholy pentalogy?)

I've always thought the UA was one of the better books TSR released.  If they had done a better job with the quality of the materials it would have been a great book!  It actually was the first real effort to patch some of the holes in the 1st edition and pump it up.  The UA also added a bunch of new spells, magical items, neat character classes, and weapon specialization!

I always felt that 2nd Edition was partially an attempt to patch the leaks poked in AD&D by Unearthed Arcana.

Some of the rules in that book completely altered the game...with "weapon specialization and "double weapon specialization" at the top of the list.
