Each of these pics are for the 1975 board game Dungeon!. But they are different from each other. Could anyone explain why? Are they different printings, from different years or what? One is much wider than the other. Did that one come with a different size board or more pieces?
Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, the landscape orientation is the 1st print.  Or is it the other way around?

Yes, landscape orientation came first.  There are also printings with the inner walls being purple or white and various portrait boxes with different logos: lizard and wizard.  At last count I think I had 9 different printings including the long box editions.

Thanks for the clarification! Were there only these 2 cover art pics before the Roslof one from 1981? What year did the non-landscape version come out? Was it from later in 1975 or was it another year? Also, is there any indication of who the artist was for these early covers? Thanks again.

If memory serves me right (and it might not in this case), the printing info goes something like this:

1st: landscape purple walls
2nd: landscape with white walls
3rd: portrait with purple walls, (I forget if this is a lizard or wizard logo)
4th: portrait with white walls, lizard logo
5th: protrait with while walls, wizard logo

Somewhere amongst the early printings is the Australian release by Jedko whose cover has a bit more colour.

Then I think we get into the Roslof long boxes which can be found with either the wizard or face logo. And then the Classic Dungeon! game and New Dungeon Game and don't forget the expansion to the New Dungeon Game as well.

That 10 different versions and I thought there was only 9 so maybe 3rd print doesn't exist but I think it really does.

All that I can find on this is what was spoken of before and the gateway catalogs.

1st had no #
2nd had F103
3rd had lizard logo and #1002

Then there is a wizard logo version small box (12 playing pieces)
Wizard logo version long box (8 playing pieces)-1980 see below
face logo version long box 1980
Face logo version long box 1981 (not sure if this or 1980 are wrong dates but took them from ebay auctions)

1989 The New Dungeon (Version I had when I was younger :) )
1992 Classic Dungeon

so 8-9, thats not counting the aussie version and spannish version (not sure if they had more then one printing either)

First appears around summer..Early spring 1976 price dropped from $12.50 to $10.95 then in early spring 1977 price dropped again to $9.95. Start of 1980 # of players goes from 1-12 to 1-8

Doesn't stat boxed till strategic review 4, while other items like EPT & D&D, etc do from the get go. (not sure though if its the more description early on that prevents this or that there was no box at the inital release.)

Wow, that's a lot of useful information. There really should be a page on the main site for this game, along with cover scans. I'll summarize what I know of the various printings:

1968: Dave Megary watches the first dungeon crawl Blackmoor scenario by Dave Arneson, based on Dave Wesley's Braunstein game and creates a hand made prototype of Dungeon! Gary Gygax confirms that it predates D&D.
Summer 1975: 1st printing - landscape with purple walls, no #, $12.50 (unknown artist)
Early spring 1976: 2nd printing -  landscape with white walls, F103, $10.95
Strategic Review issue #? (Feb, 1976): Dwarves and Clerics in Dungeon!
Early spring 1977: 3rd printing -  portrait with purple walls, lizard logo, #1002, $9.95 (unknown artist)
Dragon Magazine issue #?: Hobbits and Thieves in Dungeon!
Probably 1978: 4th printing - portrait with white walls, lizard logo
Dragon Magazine issue #? (Oct, 1978): The Monk and Bard in Dungeon!
Probably 1979: 5th printing - portrait with white walls, wizard logo
Early 1980: 6th printing - Roslof box, wizard logo, # of players goes from 1-12 to 1-8
Later 1980: 7th printing - Roslof box, face logo
Possibly 1981: same as above
1989: The New Dungeon
1989?: The New Dungeon expansion pack
1992: Classic Dungeon
1975-1979?: Australian release by Jedko with recolored cover (portrait or landscape?)
1980?: Spanish release called Calabozo, cover seen here http://files.boardgamegeek.com/bggimages/pic78963.jpg
1986?: German release by Altenburger und Stralsunder Spielkarten-Fabriken playing card company called Labyrinth, cover seen here http://www.khbo.be/spellenarchief/Databasefoto/2493.jpg

Anyone have a scan of the Jedko cover?

I'll start taking notes on these, for the non-D&D TSR stuff, which will, hopefully, eventually see print as a subweb.

Oh good, thanks!
I noticed on that Tric Trac site there is a game called Fürchterliche Feinde that has cover art very reminiscent of Calabozo.

Here is a much larger pic of it's English translation.

It's not a version of Dungeon though.

I also find it interesting how even though the Jedko release crops the sides of the landscape image off to fit the portrait orientation, it does display a lot more of the top and bottom. The original artwork may have been square shaped to begin with, before being cropped to fit the various box shapes. Though it's not a particularly impressive illustration, I would like to find out the artists name, and that of the artist that made the second picture, used for the 3rd printing (if it's a different person), because I collect that sort of information.

Jim Roslof from a cached page of Noble Knights inventory (though both the dungeon board game art pieces must have been sold since they are not currently in Aaron's inventory)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon!

Also an interesing read, especially about the cloth-vinyl map for the original.

Wow! It is hard to tell, but I don't think he did either of the 70's covers. It looks like he had 6 mockups and 1 final for the 1980 version. I can view the pics for the art still in inventory, but not for the items sold. I wonder if there is a way that I could get those pics that the cached thumbs led to.

Kevin: I saved copies of the pictures of the Roslof Dungeon! cover prototypes that NK had for sale. I can post them here later in the week (after I return home).

I placed the Jedko edition over the 1st print & vice versa to see what the original art might have looked like. Except for the original probably being black & white, I think the Jedko edition is unmanipulated because it contains eyes behind the bars on the right, and the rat in it's proper place.
