No thats a pile of crap, there is no such thing as a "test" auction.  This is just another lame assed attempt at putting a reserve price on an auctuon without paying any fees. Report it to Ebay.

Silliest thing I've seen in a while.  If you want to know how much something like this is worth, try looking at similar auctions.  It's not like these aren't up each and every week...

Actually, there is such a thing as a "test auction" ... in fact, there is a whole category for them.

http://everythingelse.listings.ebay.com ... extNonFeat

I've done test auctions before, mostly to test out a piece of third-party listing software or something similar to that. Sometimes there's just no substitute for seeing how something will look once it's on eBay's servers.

However, I won't argue the point that what that clown is doing is just idiotic on many levels. It's also not what the test category is intended for.

Hmm..if I read the eBay terms of service correctly, could this not be considered a legitimate auction and any bids placed as a binding agreement? Or is that void if an item is listed in the "test" category?

Please ignore the words "Dungeons & Dragons" form the tops of all the booklets.  These were specifically created as expansions to "Chainmail".

Actually, the doorknob in question didn't even post it in the test-auction category; it's in a D&D category.

So it's a legitimate listing, whether he believes it or not: all bids are binding, feedback can be left, etc. And, of course, fees will be charged to his account, which he might not realize.

What a waste of time, though. As mentioned above, checking completed listings serves the same purpose.

Hmmm...that listing is just ripe for somebody like the coug to place a bid, and then use the eBay rules to enforce his win...

I'll have to put that on my watch list now to see what happens....

This is a fairly typical "I haven't done any internet research, and I haven't seen one of these in person in decades" response.  I used to think these were ultra rare/valuable, too.  He probably also thinks that early Deities and Demigods were rare and/or banned.

So in short, he's likely overvaluing the books quite heavily in his own mind, to the point he thinks he needs to do a "test" auction to make sure it won't go too cheaply.  It will be unfortunate when he ultimately makes his way here, and gets a true sense of their value.
