Howdy Stephen,

bombadil wrote:Paul, can you provide more details on what is meant by the following statement in the Chainmail auction?

Yes.

The differences are listed above. If you compare the entries for the 2nd edition printings you will see that I have edited and changed the characteristics as described on the Acaeum Chainmail page and added an entirely new printing: the 2nd Ed., 2nd Print.

The Acaeum lists only the following currently:

2nd Edition, 1st Print, 1972, textured yellow-orange cover)
ooooooooo--misssing print--ooooooooo
2nd Edition, 2nd Print, 1972?, flimsy yellow cover)

There are now three confirmed printings of the 2nd edition as I have listed them above:

2nd Edition, 1st Print, May 1972, textured cover - identical to 1st Ed.
2nd Edition, 2nd Print, November 1972, smooth goldenrod cover
2nd Edition, 3rd Print, July 1973, smooth bright yellow cover

Here is a quick summary of the differences I have discovered by comparing all three printings of the 2nd edition (they are listed above as well with some additional commentary):

Printing offset:
2/1 Dark and heavy, cover text bleeds out a bit, crosshatched areas completely black (quick check shield arm of attacker on left)
2/2 Lighter, crosshatched areas still show up
2/3 Lighter, crosshatched areas still show up

Binding:
2/1 Stapled with four staples, edges not cut (is there better word?)
2/2 Stapled with two staples, edges cut
2/3 Stapled with two staples, edges cut

Cover stock:
2/1 Textured, faced white inside (identical to the 1st Edition)
2/2 Smooth goldenrod paper inside and out
2/3 Smooth bright yellow paper inside and out

Catalog listings and prices:
2/1 Wargamer's Guide to Afrika Korps $2.00, Chainmail $2.00, Tractics $7.50, Hardtack $2.00, Fast Rules $2.00, Don't Give Up the Ship $2.00
2/2 Wargamer's Guide to Afrika Korps $2.00, Wargamer's Guide to Battle of the Bulge $2.00, Chainmail $2.00, Tractics $7.50, Hardtack $2.00, Fast Rules $2.00, Don't Give Up the Ship $2.00
2/3 Wargamer's Guide to Afrika Korps $2.50, Wargamer's Guide to Battle of the Bulge $2.50, Wargamer's Guide to Stalingrad $2.50, Chainmail $2.50, Tractics $7.50, Hardtack $2.50, Fast Rules $1.50, Don't Give Up the Ship $2.50, Grosstaktik $2.50, Ironclad $2.50, Tricolor $3.00

So as Guidon produces titles it adds them to the catalog. I was able to discern printing dates by the appearance of products and the coincidence of advertisements in dated periodicals announcing their release. Also, logically as time passes prices increase.

The Chainmail offered in the auction then, is a 2/2 or a 2nd Ed., 2nd Print, a.k.a., a previously undiscovered print.

Paul

Does this mean there is a Guidon Games version of Tricolor as well?  I have seen the others but have never seen a GG Tricolor.

Uh, you can confirm it yourself by looking above.  :)

I have all three printings (having had at least 2 printings of each) and have compared them side by side. The purpose of the above post was to confirm the new printing... and to use my new scanner.

Yes there is. There are also 2 TSR printings. In the spring of 1975 Gary purchased the copyrights to a number of his former employer's publications: Chainmail, Tractics, DGUTS, Fight in the Skies, Tricolor, etc. He even picked up a few titles that Don Lowry didn't have the capital or means to publish in 1975, namely Dungeon by Dave Megarry.

Why didn't you mention the posibility of a 2nd/2nd before? If someone had had one, it would have confirmed the existence without having to "buy" another one. Isn't that kind of the point of forums?

Yes you are absolutely right but the one that I bought was in better condition - I was upgrading.

That's how it always starts.  In your case, however, the prognosis may be particularly bleak since it started on Halloween.

Here is a little research I've been putting together. Just confirmed one, possibly two, new printings. Bon appetit:

1st Edition
·        First (March 1971)
o        Published by Guidon Games -- no company address listed
o        62 total pages (47 numbered pages)
o        Binding is stapled with two staples
o        Cover is leather-textured tan-yellow with a white interior
o        Contrary to rumor, the 15-page Fantasy Supplement is indeed present
o        While this version has 12 more pages than later prints, this is almost entirely due to the font size and formatting used.  In fact, this version contains only six spells, which were expanded in later prints

If you would, please let us know, what were the original six spells?
Thank you!

BTW other than the number of spells, where there any other changes in the fantasy rules between the 1st ed and the 3rd ed?

Howdy All,

A quick update here:

The 2nd, 1st with the variant cover stock seems to be a legitimate printing after all. I just purchased a second one HERE.

Close inspection of the 1st copy I bought uses the same cover stock as the one above.
