Might have worked if they'd had an "or best offer" option. As the auction stands ($2,250), that should be a dead duck.

Taped box corners are liveable-with, if the remainder of the box is presentable (relatively clean and fresh). This one, however, is questionable to say the least...
The three volumes look OKish in terms of corners and suchlike, but are probably somewhat grubby (admitted to) and the inside covers are clearly age-toned. Storage for these has not been good, it would seem... Add to that possible thumbcreasing, which would tally with the general handling on the 2nd GH.
(And it is "only" a 2nd GH... which I'd say was fine, but it ain't valued).
Age-toning is even clearer on the white covered volumes.
+ No ref sheets, either. Try finding those if you can...

Personal "valuation", on balance, allowing for apparent condition/completeness:
2nd box set: 550-650
2nd GH: 30, 1st BLK: 60, 1st ELD: 50, 1st GDH: 40
= 750-825 total (harsh? not really, IMHO...).

If the seller's reading this, stick $1,500 "or best offer" on the lot to allow for the "must have" brigade, and hope for $1,250 or slightly over.
As-is, that would've been unlikely to have topped $600 about 1 - 1 1/2 years ago.

JM02c.

Well, hopefully there are not that many people around who have $2k+ to throw at something without caring less about the condition.
And those who have that sort of money available would probably go for the other (also overpriced) 2nd print set instead, which at least looks good... so long as you don't turn it over.

I remember telling my wife once I would never own a rare item, they were just to expensive

Well after completing my collection of not rares, my attitude changed somewhat

Unpublished Supplement V ms., anyone?

One third the asking price of the 2nd print, above, plus another $200 for all the original 1973 Kalibruhn maps.
No competition, IMHO...

I'll take it, and I'm not kidding.

Although I'm sure your comment was purely rhetorical...damn.

Highly rhetorical; sorry, Stephen.

(*checks*. +$199.10, actually. Bill picked up the mass of notes for $152 when I was being very careful not to hype the bids too much prior to the items that followed. *sighs* I needn't have worried...
Could've added "all-bar-one of the first proper 'setting'/'scenario' maps on the Lake Geneva axis" (Mordenkainen, Bigby, the road to D&D, all that jazz) (= El Raja Key, 1972/3) => three-tenths of the price of that not-so-good 2nd print & supps, but I think the point was made. i.e. Interesting where people see "value" and all too easy to get carried away without sitting back to think...
Am just glad I don't have the 'need' to be in the market for a woodie just now).

=

The nice 2nd print auction is now over, anyhow. One offer rejected, the other left to lapse.

** expired/removed eBay auction **

(unsold at $2,450, from $1,915 previously)
