Awesome. I hadn't seen most of those ads from the '76-'78. The photo in the Basic Set ad was used elsewhere, inc the bottom of the box set, but I haven't seen that particular ad before. Amazing what is still being turned up!

fyi:

Panzerfaust #51 [Mar/Apr 1972] (fullsized then, not the digest sized later), back cover

2 Guidon ads (duh, the usual); lower half for Hardtack/Zocchi (ACW), upper half for ($2.00) Chainmail -- and half that ad is for the Fantasy Supplement, mentioning Tolkien and R.E. Howard specifically.

Scanner buried behind boxes of games atm, will try to do that later.

I think this is the earliest printed advertisement: Gary sent it to a fanzine February 27, 1974.

I put up scans of a few related early advertisements here: playingattheworld.blogspot.com/2013/10/ ... ns_20.html

Hey Jon,

I think this is the same as the first, color version that Gary sent along to Lurvey for GPGP Newsletter as you mention above. He also personally mailed them out, apparently, as this one is accompanied by a handwritten letter dated 1 June 1974:

Gary wrote in Early TSR/D&D advertisements & catalogs:heroically illustrated

Certainly puts a spin on art - some of it looks like it was done by chimpanzees, but no, it was really an act of heroism. The artist did these while being pursued by hobgoblins & shot with crossbows, he was barely able to craw into our offices to give us the final pieces with his dying breath. That ink splotch at the beginning is really blood.

Probably. There's good evidence that Gary sent early flyers for TSR in all his correspondence early in 1974, and was urging Arneson to do the same (I talk about it in PatW). I'm not sure if that one is strictly identical to the very earliest version of the flyer, as the order form is cut out of that one. There is a subtle difference in some color versions of the flyer which only shows up in the order form: the "Please send me" line is different than in the scan above. But yes, probably the one you're showing would have had an order form that looked like the February version.

Another early advertisement, this one promoting Greyhawk as well as the Guidon titles recently reissued by TSR, from mid-1975. I like how you can tell from the font on "Additional" that this is the true first Greyhawk.
