I just don't get what all the fuss is about -- but then I don't collect stuff younger than 15 years or so.  

bak... well sorta; in Rockford IL (NW of Chicago) en route to home. I'll hang out here until Wednesday morning tho, a lot to catalog and put away.

ACE meeting was very cool, just a light-gauge meet 'n' greet without a set time. Yup, I handed out some cookies and buttons and a bit later (after everyone cleaned up; all our baked goods are all-natural and all-butter), gave a private tour behind the scenes, with emphasis on the collectibles.

It's kinda weird to see stacks of OD&D supplements and almost a dozen whites (8 OCE's and at least 3 4ths/5ths) and piles of old Arduin and things like that (weird at least to SOME people; you guys may be an exception) -- but we're used to that, being the world's largest game convention with a heavy emphasis on hobby stuff.

Those wacky BurntBoys came through with a pile of D&D oddities, the licensed stuff they mentioned, and a few other things showed up as well; Kaskoid put in his original Lizard Man TSR button, hoping for $20-30, and got $125 for it. True enough that you don't see 'em any more...

Hey MrMishler, I didn't have your button handy when you dropped by. Praps I should mail it to you. Also have buttons for 3 others who CLAIMED they would be there but didn't show up; praps I should auction 'em off next year and see if you'll buy 'em. ;> I do hope to have The Wham do more for next year's ACE meeting, of course... or maybe shift gears and have Erol or Darlene or somebody else do the custom art, and start a whole new line of collectibles. Hmmmm....

We did indeed have a pair of browns, nothing to scream about tho; the hottie had electrical tape holding it together but the booklets & ref sheets were all Gygax-autographed as someone commented, so it soared (imho) to $1950. Starting to rethink the value of the signature at this point, especially as Gary isn't doing so great and certainly won't ever be at another GenCon to autograph things. Anyway, the second one had a mismatched book 3 and no autographs, and topped out at $1100.

I did a lookabout for the items some of you had emailed me (Want Lists), but sadly absolutely nothing popped up, not even a Tricolor let alone a Dwarven Glory or Tamo/Inver bagged. Nor a Tsoj; musta been an off year, or praps our karma was offset by the stack of whites & browns.

I had a brainstorm a few years back and decided to run the best & rarest on Friday night; all you deep-pocket folks get your heavy spending done then, and have a good handle on how much you have left. (And I want you to spend it!) So we do the 'lesser' collectibles (like the other Brown!?!) on Saturday.

Thursday night we did semi- and full-collectibles from 6 pm onward; we zipped right along and finished by 11:30 pm. Friday night was of fairly typical duration, finished at 1:09... and I know exactly because Sat. morning they announced the results of the Pool, the first-ever, where all the auction staff bought times and the winner took the take. (::blush:: Cripes, people are betting on ME...) But Kaskoid brought it a huge batch of fantasy minis, and we had 5 hours of 'em instead of one, so Saturday ran severely behind-schedule most of the evening and finished very late, about 2:40. (And wouldn't you know, the same darn guy won BOTH pools.)

Auction bottom line: 11,283 lots (many with multiple items), total gross sales over $117,000. Thanks to our pooterdude (one Bruce Carson from Massachusetts) and his unique software that we've refined over the last few years, we took in all the items on Wed. thru Sat. and paid all the (roughly) 2500 sellers by 3 pm Sunday.

So now back to the real world... tho it takes a while for the GenCon high to wear off.

That will go down as one of my coolest Gen Con acquisitions this year... and that includes a copy of The Order of the Stick: No Cure for the Paladin Blues which, I discovered upon purchasing it, had an excerpt from my Comics Buyer's Guide review of the first OotS book as the leading review on its back cover...

You know what would be better! An Acaeum dinner on the Friday prior to the collectables auction.  Get everybody together about 7:00 and eat, talk and get merry for a few hours and hit the auction all in one swoop.  It would be a blast.
