I have noticed that the orange spines of my 1E hardcovers all vary in different shades of orange (from wheat to darkorange, one has a pinkish color). Are these differences created by the print machines (e.g. Unearthed Arcana was printed by a different company and in a different year than the FR adventures etc.)? Or is it bleaching because some previous owners had the book standing in the full sun?

Ralf, I believe it has to do with the inks used during the print run.  I found a UA book a couple of years back in a box of mine that was still in the bag I brought it home from the bookstore in.  It was one of those, 'Damn, I thought I lost this' type things.  It never saw the light of day for 10 years and its spine is pink.  I am sure TSR was not happy with the quality of some the colors that was coming back from the printer(s).  I can't recall if it was pink at the time of purchase.   But I also highly doubt that it faded over time because of how it was stored.
