Stephen, FWIW I hope that you do reconsider selling away all of your stuff.  I mean I would love to get my hands on some of it of course if you do in fact decide to sell it, but I would much rather see you keep it all and remain a part of the community. :)

Stephen

You still haven't said why you are looking at selling.  As Brian says we would hate to lose another member of the community.

Whatever Stephen decides to do, I hope he sticks around the forum/community.  I've always enjoyed and looked forward to reading his witty posts.

I can't say I have never thought about selling off, too. And for me, it is not about the money either. The vast majority of my collection sits in storage boxes sealed away in plastic sleeves in a dark storage room. Every so often, I'll get the urge to read a module and pull one out. That is probably the only reason I keep it all.

I also compiled my collection from buying most of it new when they came out years ago. So I have a connection of sorts to those items. Childhood toys and all that. One day, when I no longer get the urge to read U1 for the 50th time, the end will come. But not today.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

For me there are four reasons why I collect and will do so for the foreseeable future:

Because I think these games are/were simply great.  Yes, I know that ‘roleplaying' has been around for ever, but tabletop pen & paper & dice roleplaying games were of my time.  They didn't exist before, and now they do and the world is (in some small way) different because of that.

Sentiment -- because I was part of that, and because some of the best times of my youth are directly connected to D&D -- partly the gaming and partly just with the people with whom I gamed.

For the fun.  Because I still game - although probably only once every six or eight weeks or so.  But it all comes flooding back.

Because I am still in touch with the people I spent/am spending  these times with and the games are part of that too.

So, for the history, the sentiment, the fun and the people I will keep collecting.  I don't have the space or the £££ to have three of everything, but if I can build a collection over the years to come that I am proud of that will be enough.

Recently some people have commented that the Aaceum is a bit unfriendly, and there are certainly times when people disagree here.  But I have found the people on this site to be in the main, kind, generous and friendly.  And, that is a bonus.

Yes, thanks.  Very pleased with that, although there is more to come...

BUT not now.  The sun is out , I am not working, I am off to meet a friend and have a drink by the river.  Although I have not had lunch yet, so perhaps a pie first.  :)

Bliss.

I tend to think on it a couple of ways.

Some of the rares I never even knew existed, and every time I manage to grab hold of one it's like Christmas (and not because of the price). Just before someone directed me to this site my friends and I thought the boxed set of World of Greyhawk was the rarest D&D item  8O

Its great to read and re-read the 'old-stuff', let the eyes glaze over and simply remember times when everything was a little easier and simpler - laughing and joking with real-good mates the whole weekend, rather than finding time for a quick hello every few weeks.

At the moment some of my items may be in boxes but that'll change when the study's finished. Idea is to display rather than hide them -though the visitors likely won't 'get it' -It'll be a good private joke.

Biggest reason is that in the future when my kids are older, hopefully I'll have something that I can show them and have some great fun with. If they dont want to there's no pressure from here, but at least the options will be open.

You can't always get what you want, but then again, you won't miss it 'till it's gone.

BTW Al was that a 'mate' sneaking into the vocab there?

I know what you mean.  I had never heard of or even seen a white box rules much less a woodgrain growing up.  The Erol Otus basic set is the first D&D item I remember seeing in stores.  Not long after I joined the forum, I got together with Badmike and Aneoth and became a bit embarassed while we were talking about the rare items we had.

Went something like this:

Aneoth:  "I just picked up an Orange B3 and a first print Chainmail.  They will look really nice next to my R1-4, RPGA 1-4, and mint Woodgrain set."

Badmike:  "Somewhere in the warehouse of stuff I have are a lot of really rare non-tsr items by publishers like Mayfair, Judges Guild, The Companions, etc.  I also have a ton of rare Call of Cthulhu, Runequest, etc, etc, etc."

Kingofpain89:  "I just picked up Greyhawk Ruins and Iuz the Evil."

Needless to say, both of them looked at me kinda funny when I said that (dont deny it Mike   ).  But over the last couple of years I have been able to expand on my knowledge and collection....all due to this site and the people here.  If I didnt collect this stuff I would be a whole lot richer moneywise and have a whole lot more time on my hands.  Course I would also probably have no friends and be addicted to porn.

Many thanks to everyone for the sound advice.  Special thanks to Deadlord39 and bclarkie for reasons known only to them from beginning to end.

Up for sale next week will be the black-foldered Palace of the Vampire Queen that I bought from Rick Bauer in Bahrain.  It's the one that precipitated the infamous "camel-toe" incident that some of you may remember.  Ah, yes, those were heady days indeed.

I just laughed my ass off, King, thanks for that....I don't know if it was QUITE as bad as all that, but you manage to hold your own, and you shouldn't compare yourselves to two old guys that basically threw all their money away on old games.  Then again, I take it back, it was exactly just like that.....LOL.  Man, we have got to have another North Texas Acaeum meeting coming up this summer.  We need to get the word out and see if we can roust anyone new here from the north TX area.....
BTW, Nothing wrong with porn, but you dont get nearly the great memories out of that as game stuff (what in the world did I just say...?)

Good idea....bad time period.  Too damn hot and humid in the summer around here.  We ought to have it around GenCon time since it looks like neither of us will be going (darn wedding   ).

I'm not sure if there are any others from the Dallas area that post on here anymore.  Maybe you could post over on Dragonsfoot?  Or do you think that they might think we are too uppity?*

*Just a little joke for any of you Dragonsfoot fellows that may be lurking.  :P

Seems the foldered PoVQ may already have a new home, but it's not a done deal yet.  If it doesn't work out, I'll put it up for offers here, then resort to e_ay if I have to.

The RPGA mods will go up next.

I didn't know it was up for offers or I would have made one!  Please open this up to the masses Stephen.

Thanks
Jeff

You're right, Jeff.  I'm going to put up the PoVQ for others to see and make offers on.
