Has anyone heard of an OCE set with dice?  Or maybe a white box set with dice?  I had a question on completeness of my OCE auction and am stumped.

The questioner sent me a link to this OCE auction:

Any ideas if the dice pictured were added from another item or could they have really came with the box?

I think this has been discussed in the past but I can't quite remember the outcome/evidence. I believe but am not 100% sure that the white box/OCE did not come with dice, although it is possible a game shop or retailer added them.

I believe that white dice with a crayon came with some of the later basic boxes.  I believe that Tim Kask was the source on that.

I do know that in the early days of the game they were grabbing dice from whatever ready sources they had to put into those basic boxes.

The "tank dice" in a gamer's bag were dead giveaways to the age of his collection.

When I bought my then-shrinked OCE from the Mail Order Hobby Shop back in the early 80s, it didn't come with dice, but I have heard rumors that such sets may have existed too.

This is one of the reasons that I think we need an inventory listing on the site for the box sets:  it's good to know which ones came with what kinds of dice (with and without crayons), which had RPGA sign up forms, which had Dragon ads, etc., etc., etc.

How do you do that, though?  You can't go by memory, because, well -- memories fade.  Unless someone's got an OCE in SW that rattles when they shake it, we can't believe it came with dice.  It's even harder to prove something didn't come with a box, short of opening a SW copy.  :?

I distinctly remember white box sets with a set of poly dice available in GW in the late 70s.  But they could quite easily have been added by GW.  Maybe not OCE and definitely without SW or it had been removed.

There was no one keeping records on all this stuff, was there?

Somewhere in the boxes that WoC got from TSR there has to be a file that has an invoice for these things...or a packing list, or something.

Or, was all that stuff tossed?

And, if these files still existed, what do you think each page of records would bring at auction?

Or was it Games Centre...?  And what ever happened to them?

We must find someone who owns a shrinkwrapped copy... and an X-ray machine!

I have a shrinked Tractics white box that has dice in it, since you can see the slight outdention (is that a word) in the box lid.

We know that the Basic/Expert sets all came with dice, other than the ones that came with chits when TSR had a dice shortage.

Lankhmar, William the Conqueror, and Dungeon all came with dice, but they were standard 6 siders (and somewhat small ones at that).  They were all released 1975-1976, same with Tractics.  So, TSR was definitely doing dice then.

Do any of the TSR catalogs show OCEs and/or White Boxes with dice in the illustrations?

In the 1981 "Gateway To Adventure" catalog, the picture of the OCE and the description do not list dice. The polyhedra set and the percentile set are listed seperatly towards the back of the catalog.  FYI, the t-shirts on page 13 are SWEET  :D !!!  Anybody have one?

I have a Lou Zocchi product from April 1979 that has a catalog of RPG/gaming items printed inside.  The description of "DUNGEONS & DRAGONS COLLECTOR'S EDITION $12.00" states that "The Polyhedra dice needed to play this game must be purchased separately."

Excellent find, John!  So, what other box sets do we need to catalog and define?

Foul:  how do you want to go about listing the extra contents of box sets as part of the Acaeum info template?

Wouldn't the boxed sets with the chits be more valuable than ones with dice?
