OK, I went to the well once and it seemed ok. Now I bought a number of items from the Cougar, all at once, and he is saying £40 to ship the items below. Is this what I should expect as an accurate shipping cost? I have bought other items from the UK and not paid so much. If it is way out of line would someone be willing to act as a relay shipper for me?

Looks like you might do well to ask Al.

Perhaps check with cougie first as to what the total packed weight is; then expect him to be a bit grumpy if you ask him to quote a UK delivery charge, instead.

I'd guess he's charging non-printed matter postal rates (extortionate for anything over 2kg via overseas), but will probably send via printed matter rate for now (still not at all cheap, to be honest).

£40.00 sounds like a nice big round number.

I do not know much about that Birthright stuff - if they are hardback books or box sets, it will be expensive.  If all that stuff is slim old style  module-sized then it is too much.

If they are all books with paper covers, like gazetteers, you're probably looking at about £24 Royal Mail Airsure (trackable) and maybe (£16-20) Airmail. That's a guess based on my experiences.

If you have a weight for the lot, you can check the actual cost at www.royalmail.co.uk or www.parcelforce.co.uk . I don't know how much Cougie charges for handling and packaging materials.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

You might want to make sure you pay the insurance price.  Otherwise Cougie will "Pull a Kitty" on you and the items will get lost, of which he won't be responsible since you didn't buy insurance...

The problem with Royal Mail is if package go over 2kg, shipping is done by Parcel Force and postage become very expensive. But for this lot it is absolutely not the actual postage.

If you found a UK relay, I think the total will come near £40 too... 15£ to ship in UK (or more with his shipping policy) and after 15-20 to ship to you.

Cougar done the same thing to me. After hard discussions he finally accepts to make a discount on shipping (he calculates shipping rates in a similar manner as Tonya or Titan).

I got the following from him:

air mail
I only use surface when requested as it takes 6~8 weeks,
is sometimes uninsurable
if things lost /delayed people blame me
any loss/ damage is buyers risk
I can do surface with above understandings for  £25
PLEASE STATE SURFACE WITH PAYMENT IF CHOSEN

Any input or advice would be welcome.

I don't see any hardcovers there, so take a bunch of comparable-sized modules and weigh them. Then use the U.K. site to estimate shipping.
40 pounds is absurd. I hust had 5 of the large boxed sets of minis shipped over for under 20.
You could tell him flat out that if the shipping is too much higher than what he paid, then he gets negged. Assuming he survives the subsequent heart attack, he will probably cut it.

As before, ask him for the total shipping weight to compare with the printed paper rate.
If he's using a straightforward addition, the quote for surface compared with airmail indicates a packing weight just over 3kg and a packing/handling charge of £10 or so, but that's just a guess.

(And yes, no harm in holding that threat of a neg for overcharging on postage & packing, just in case).

Printed Paper Rate (the UK version of Media Mail) really sucks. The PO hiked the prices and now I send all my stuff as small packets 'cos its cheaper than PP.

I know I am probably stating the obvious here and I am not trying to be a d**k, but why would you buy from Coug in the 1st place?  Its not like it hasn't already been documented thoroughly about his tactics. :?

Yes, would probably be stating the obvious :?
Think we're just trying to help a fellow collector who thought the kitty wouldn't bite.

(Would use the standard "received wisdom" about cougars always being wild animals, tho' that's not my own line on the topic ;)).

Good luck, Marlith, and if the worst comes to the worst try to write it off against some of those excellent wins you've had before.
(And make that neg a concise work of art, if required!)

I assume he's saying: "I don't care if you pay less for shipping, if you choose air mail there's the insurance, when the items don't get to you I refund you the item costs but not the shipping, if you choose surface I won't refund you anything. Either way, I win."

ooch...that hurt...here let me roll over so you can kick the other half of my ribs      Short answer must be that I am an idiot....

In another life I must have been from Missouri. One of those things where you think the liver can't taste that bad or the battery shock on your tongue is not that bad....I bought one item and it went well so I thought I would test the waters a little deeper and now I see the surface is calm but the water is near boiling, just to fool the unsuspecting.

Given that confession if I can still get someone there to accept a package from him I will try and workout a deal where he ships local and then I pay the further shipping with something for the effort. Better I pay more and someone good gets something out of it.

Has anyone here ever bought and refused to pay his shipping costs? I am wondering about the ramifications to my eBay account and feedback rating?

Trouble is (as noted by lokiwookie, above), by the time you've paid local shipping within the UK, plus shipping to the US at cost, the total is likely to be fairly close to his £40 quote.
Al might be able to carry that off, but wouldn't hold out any great hopes for massive savings.

You could always see whether he's willing to write-off the items at half-cost. ()

This is the kitty from whom I received a neg after having rounded up a £4.50 purchase to ~£8 since I thought it had gone too cheap. Didn't save me from having to put up with the mis-described item faults and (as he did back then) incessant demands for feedback.

Anyone can kill your feedback rating: best not to stress about that, IMO!

I would rather give it to the postal service than line the pockets of someone who is gouging me on shipping.

Neither would be better (the postal services do very well out of us already!), but agreed with that :)
