That's because Cary144 is a bad mutha humpa. He's got the deepest pockets of any collector I've seen on eBay. He's the guy who paid $3000 for the orange B3, remember?? His pockets roll deep!!!

Yeh, kudos to the seller!  Funny thing is the seller probably is very happy, and thinking "Man, the other stuff must be worth a bunch also!" without knowing they won't have another auction in the same galaxy of this one unless they have a ST1 stashed away....!

Started the auction at 19.99, probably had no idea what they were auctioning off.   Too bad the seller didn't put it up as BIN...

I wouldn't have been complaining... and $1,980 round-up should have gotten a smile, had they gone with that. ;)

Yep; seller's probably still clueless as to what is/is not of value across the board (they had Cerebus listed as a superhero comic... *cough*) and yet they're managing to list the good stuff without BINs from what I could see: neat sixth-sense trick!

Whoever the original collector was, they had pretty good taste (IMHO). Might not have approved at having someone use a bulldog clip to keep their nice 1st print Authentic Thaumaturgy open for photographing, however;

@Zen: yeah, $3k+50 on that SW'd OB3 with faults. Could've gotten the original plates for not much more. Degassy's still probably in the lead for "deepest pockets", excluding the art side. Whoever's looking to buy-out Burnie Bros. lock, stock and barrel certainly has a dollar or two set aside. (Won't even know where that Blanche has gone to, to direct future offers there "just in case").

@KoP: third bid was mine - and still several hundred dollars high, I thought, given the possible DG "issue" and that I really don't need another black folder PotVQ with faults.

The likes of the 1st (presumed) Swords & Spells did go somewhat cheap had there been a need for "spares".

Anyhow; back to work.... Have a good Sunday, y'all.

Last year I thought the demand for these had faded away and I remember the price falling quite low. Of course demand seems to flip/flop for some items every six months or so on ebay.

It's a title that is commonly known to be collectible. Someone new to RPG collecting might go for it first, without knowing it can be had for cheaper.

I'm guilty of that. Paid an arm and part of a leg for a set, then got a second one for $25

silly prices for UK HB 1st ed (this time 9th print!) DMG continues, especially after using:

"rare"

then "very rare",  "1st edition" and refering to the 36GBP from a week or so ago.

Unfortunately, his MM was only 4th edition    otherwise he might have made more than 17GBP!    :P

Whoa whoa whoa.  That's no measly 4th -- it's the ultra-rare 6th!  It says "fourth edition", but that's why it's so valuable -- it's a misprint.

It's not quite as valuable as the 5th, which contains the misprint but also omits credit to Dave Arneson!

No, don't quote me on that.

I never have understood the hyper-inflated price that these sometimes go for.

D&DG is one of my favorite 1st edition hardcovers and I have several, including 1st and 2nd printings.  I have never paid higher than $10 for any of them, and they range in condition from Fine to Good.  I just picked up another 2nd printing for $9.  The things just aren't that rare, despite the excitement over the 2 extra mythoi.

It's no wonder I avoid e-bay like the plague.  Hunting around and keeping your eyes open sure pays off.

For those who missed out on the one I posted first here is one for slightly less.

About $68 less.

(No bids started at $9.99)

Well. they want you to pay shipping too...

So, another $12.60.

So its actually only $56.39 cheaper.....

These have been going for about $30 up until a month or two ago when I stopped tracking them. Pretty much without regard to the edition.

I have to imagine more will come.

Could a little plastic pernicon from LJN unseat the first print woody as the most valuable D&D item of all time? :clown:
