I confused editions with printings.  I should have said, 3rd Edition.  The copy of Holmes in my hand has a December 1979 date on it, making it one of the last printings of the third edition.  The other copy is in fact a second printing from January 1978.  That printing has "TM Reg. App. For" beneath the title on both the front cover and the title page.

So, when did the Holmes' Basic Rulebook get its registered trademark symbol?

The change happened between the 2nd printing ( 01/78 ) and 3rd printing ( 05/78 ).  This is consistent with the date of 03/78 for the OD&D booklets.
