I'm looking to start a 1st Ed Ad&d campaign on a bi-monthly basis with some old friends. Now I was going to have the characters as sort of investigator/bounty hunter types but I need a decent city to set the action in. Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent city to set the action in? Don't mind if it's TSR or not as the setting is my own but the main thing I really need is some really good maps for chases over rooftops, pubs, markets etc. I don't mind re-writing the background (I always do to some extent no matter how thorough the background is I always find extra bits to personalise things!) so I suppose it doesn't even need to be D&D based at all at a push.

P.S. UK Sellers: Could do with buying a sort of starter set for three new players (three PHB 1st Ed any edition but decent condition and a set of dice for each and maybe one DMG so I don't have to worry about getting my own copies covered in beer and junk food!) if you have them kicking about gimme a shout and maybe we can work out a deal!

City State of the Invincible Overlord or City State of the World Emporer are good choices :)

You can download the City of Greyhawk maps published by Paizo in Living Greyhawk Journal #2 for free on the author/artist's web site at http://www.melkot.com/locations/cogh/cogh.html (dialup folks beware, the files are quite large).

You can also pick up the old Theives' World box set also.
Definatley a lot of old school goodness in that one.

City State of the Invincible Overlord is a good solid basis for any campaign.

On a smaller scale (but probably more expensive), you may consider Midkemia (Carse, Jonril, Tulan). These are also a good solid base to build a campaign on. Or even the Wheeler's Islandia campaign world (Curse on Hareth, Plague of Terror, Gems For Death). They also build into an imensely detailed campaign world, but one that is very dark and vicious.

As regards the bounty hunter concept per se, you'd be better floating the idea on the general forum at http://www.dragonsfoot.org. They are obsessive about their game play over there, and I've found if you ask a question looking for ideas, they are more than happy to run with the topic.

I did this a long time ago and it worked quite well.  Pick up the oldest street map you can find of a place that you are familiar with.  A few name changes, remove any modern artifacts that are out of place e.g. railway lines and you have a great setting and somewhere that your are instantly familiar with.  Its a lot of work to populate it completely.  But what I did was cross reference it back to published material like CSIO.

You could try http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 7381847023 for example.

I was thinking Harn or Irrillian (SP) if anyone remembers them? Irillian was a WD thing and I'm no computer whizz so I I prolly couldn't make hte maps merge (plus printer not working for reasons I'll never figure!) so how about Waterdeep re-written? I seem to remember Harn was published in parts and I can't recall seeing a full version but this may be my mind failing in my dotage!

I appreciate the thought John but one of the players is a local firefighter and another works for the local police so I'd prefer a town apart from mine for obvious reasons!

The City State things sound promising are they Mayfair items?

If you can get ahold of Volo's Guide to Waterdeep (you don't even really need the map with it), there are dozens and dozens of descriptions of taverns, inns, festhalls, places of interest, shops, characters, etc.  You can take out the descriptions you like and use them to spice up various points in your own city, just plug them in when you need an instant tavern or inn.

Can't recall with regards to high-detail maps, if that's what you're looking for specifically, but how 'bout good ol' Lankhmar on a cost-value basis and a relatively easy setting within which to plan sessions in an episodic manner?

£3 is about the mark (and coug has 2e cheaper)

e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 8771724946

If you're not familiar with the background, much of value can be derived from "The Swords of Lankhmar"

( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 8768763865 / http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 8770590250 ), 'though there's no reason why not to use the map/book alone and wing it... :)

Just a thought, anyhow.

You cannot beat Judges Guild's Verbosh for old-school humor and interesting NPCs.  It is usually available for cheap and you might enjoy just reading it.  Lots of adventure hidden there for a bargain.

If you are looking for a Judges Guild map like the City State of the Invincible Overlord, but without the price, try Tarantis.  One of these just sold on Ebay for $1.04 or something close just two days ago.   Tarantis is usable and fun and is available for reasonable prices...often still in shrinkwrap.   8O

OR...go to Fencert's Ebay shop and buy one of his copies of the D20 update of City State of the Invincible Overlord.  This hardback book has a map that is not quite as cool as the original brown paper, but still very good.  It also incorporates much of the material that originally appeared in Wraith Overlord.  Fencert has an excellent price and he is an uber-reliable seller.   8)

Do not buy Mayfair's silly re-do of City State of the Invincible Overlord.  Sucks.  Plain and simple.  Sucks.  More like City State of the Offensive Odoreaters or Salad State of the Cabbage Patch Whimps.  Did I mention not to buy it? Ugh!  :x

The original City State of the Invincible Overlord has the benefits of having it's surrounding wilderness already detailed, and it also has a complete sewer system detailed, Wraith Overlord. It's the most complete city system I've come across.
