Mars wrote:Is that true?  A lot of books state that they can in no part be copied or converted into a different type of media.  In some cases the books explicitly says you are allowed to photocopy the character sheets or players map but that's all.

I don't think it is legal to make a copy even if you own the product.  But I don't think you would ever get charged for doing this either.  The popo have better things to do.  Copying and selling for profit is a more serious offence.

Publishers claim more rights than they actually have. For example, it's standard to say that a book cannot "be reproduced in whole or in part" without permission but fair use doctrine guarantees that sections of copyrighted material can be reproduced for certain purposes without permission. For example, suppose someone publishes a book. I can write a book refuting his book and quote the relevant sections from his book without permission.

Parody/satire is also protected.

By the way, I am not a lawyer and the above is not legal advice.

You can make a photocopy, or other type of copy, of your own property for your own use.

This is called "Fair Use."

Back when we used to buy vinyl records, I used to tape my albums and use the tapes instead in order to keep the record in mint condition.  (And self-made tapes were generally of better quality than factory tapes.)  That is perfectly legal so long as you are not handing out your fair use copy to anyone else.

Just don't give away your copies and you are OK so long as you own the original.

There are lots of groovy legal quagmires, too.  "Rules lawyers" have nothing on their namesakes.

For example, assume you sold/gave away your original.  Is it legal to give away your copies to the same individual?  Technically, no.  That's distribution of copyrighted work, and an infringement on the copyright holder's exclusive rights.  You'd need to destroy them, as you no longer owned the original.  For it to be fair use, the new owner would need to make their own copies.

Of course, that should be thrown out of court almost immediately, but it's the sort of insanity that you can have a field day with, if you have a lot of money to burn.

I am tempted to send this seller and email that says, "Even though that this is what you are really doing, you still can't give them away either Jack-ass!".  Gawd do these people piss me off.

He is infringeing as well. We researched it last Wednesday. You cannot offer a copyrighted product as a "free" item in a sale for profit.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

I assume you mean an illegally infringing copy of the aforementioned product?  Otherwise, this is news!  8O

I'm pretty sure I can throw in an actual B2 in any auction I want and not charge for it.  If not, I'll start charging $0.01 to cover my butt...  :?:
