My last question about the size of collections showed some really big ones that give us beginning collectors some idea what we're in for over the long haul.

So, I have another question for you.  How do you keep track of what you've got?

Again, I'll start this and say I keep everything in an Excel file that contains a wealth of information about the product including my purchase cost.  That being said, I'm in the process of migrating that simple flat database to a fully realtional one in Access.

I used to have an incomplete longhand on legal pad but I'm now entering final details into an Excel doc. Will probably build a custom one once I'm finished (to include photos, long personal notes and such).

I'd love to hear how guys like Frank, et al and the big online sellers keep track.

I keep track of my collection as a Word document, listed roughly by edition or company, book price, and value. Not the greatest information wise, but serves its purpose.

Multiple Word documents. One for hardcovers, one for modules, one for rares, etc. I leave a printout on each shelf with what it contains, and if something comes in I write it on the sheet, then update every once in a while.
I could probably bribe the wife into making Excel sheets, but I'm too cheap to bother.

Basically, I use the famous checklist pdf, keeping in memory whatever is missing on that list.

I am planning to move to a MySQL database when I have the time and I'm in the right mood.

Excel. I'd prefer a database, but I'm a 12th-level Excel user and a zero-level NPC with any database programs.

Another vote for multi sheet Excel document. One sheet for fantasy RPGs, another for milsim RPGs, another for wargames, another for wargame magazines (mags w/ games in them), etc.

For the FRPG section everything is organized first according to system(AD&D 1st ed, AD&D 2n ed, OD&D, Hackmaster, etc) then alphabetically. Columns include system, title, edition, contents (adventure, sourcebook, camaign, etc), code reference, publisher, year, condition, and cost. Seems to work great for me. I take a printed copy with me place to place.

On multiple legal pads, though one day I fantasize about having the spare time to put it all together in Access or MySQL.
