i just moved the PCs between greyhawk and ravenloft with "strange" circumstances that they couldnt do anything about. kept things fresh, the PCs couldnt plan too far ahead and i kept them off-balance like that and it just made for some superb scenarios with the kinda mood you can get with the setting.

I am going to start a twice-monthly 2nd ed game next month for some close friends in the FR setting with a base in Waterdeep. I was planning to shift game worlds every five levels or so. The great thing is they won't recognise any Ad&d setting (none of them having any form of Ad&d before) so I was toying with idea of "gating" them to Glorantha the Runequest world. I know enough Glorantha tomake it work as a roleplaying experience just not sure the two worlds are really compatable. I'd welcome some informed opinion! :)

What made a module unplayable for me:

1)  Required a specific world setting or campaign.

2)  Introduced goofy concepts or new rules.

3)  Lacked any real adventure...nothing to kill.

4)  Assumed my players would do the stupidest thing.

5)  3-D maps.

Hold on to your hat, folks. I know there are some major players on the board, but I may have everyone beat. Here is my collection:

DMG
PHB
MM1

... and some dice.

Its a start. :)

That picture got one of my friends in trouble!  Devil worship you know

He was not allowed to play after mommy got a hold of that book.  He still snuck over and played as often as possible though.

I do not agree at all... I do change adventures around a bit, but do not encounter many problems.
I really like when they state where an adventure takes place, that does fit better in our ongoing campaigns.  What goofy concepts? New rules are always nice, keeps the the game fresh.
Nothing to kill?? I believe all basic D&D modules involve killing something. But killing isn't the point, we often have a great time just roleplaying whitout anyone dying.
4. True, many modules try to force the adventurers in a paladin like behaviour. So that takes some fixing most of the time.
5. We once made a 3d PC map just to challenge ourselves ;)

I definitely prefer medieval-style settings, and as much realism as I can get. I typically run low magic campaigns, which keeps them much more interesting. I quickly grew bored of DMs whose players had magic dripping off them.
Most of the towns in my campaigns don't even have a mage. Wizards are rare.

Yes but what printings of each and who was the manufacturer of the dice. You also need to take into account the condition of the books. Are the dice still bagged?

It is all you need (I started with a basic box set) so at least you can take it to higher levels with what you have.

This sounds pretty cool, I've always liked this kind of play style too. But, at high level in Mystara it is almost impossible to avoid. Glantri campaign anyone...

I really didnt care whether the maps were 2- or 3-d but I gotta tell you, for me the maps for the original Ravenloft were the coolest ever.  A lot of people (including my DM) hated trying to figure out the 3-D maps for that module.  It was a bitch to map out for the players but it was still cool.

One of my all-time favorite modules was The Forest Oracle.  Low-level, several intermediate challenges, decent treasure, puzzles, great setting.  Pretty much had all the requisites for a good adventure.  And it had Druids!  :D

i thought the 3D map in the original ravenloft was really easy to map - i've DM'd it a few times and never had a prob....

to each their own tho and i can see how its confusing to others.

I run my own game system, Sen. No levels or classes. Makes it much easier, and far more realistic.
