Pretty neat. I've wanted to make a custom chess board myself, based on "Viking chess" since that's my favorite.

Stormber bought the original set, and iirc he's got quite a collection of minis so we should hit him up for some pics.

I'm sure she could whip up some more boards...I'll see what she thinks about it.

Anyone else interested?

My wife is at a point with her production load where she can produce some sets in the near future.  Doug suggested I run a Dutch auction on RPG Marketplace, which sounds like a brilliant plan.  Please note, the cost of glass has risen substantially since the last set was made in 2005 (particularly the cost of red glass, for some reason), while at the same time supplies of some shades and types of glass have dwindled.  Therefore, it might take some time to get the materials, depending on the number of orders (5 have indicated interest so far).  We're working on a price including UPS shipping within the US, and I'll update when we've got that worked out.

Yes, just put the item at RPGMarkeplace.com as a dutch auction with XX number available (whatever number she is willing to make). Then set them with a BIN only and then people can just place orders.

You can set them all as Paypal Offline so you can send individual invoices with freight.

Just a basic "ordering system" of sorts.

What's a dutch auction again??  Is it the same as multiple sets available with BINs, or is there some nuance I'm missing here?

Yes, you can list an item with a BIN and show 25 available, people can buy 1 or more at the BIN price

Hi Allan,

We just received a huge shipment of glass for the boards, and will get a Dutch auction posted on RPG Marketplace as soon as we can get the price inclusive shipping nailed down.  It's going to be higher than I initially indicated (cost of everything has gone up, including glass and shipping, since Paul bought his set).  Thanks for asking, and stay tuned.

Does anyone have thoughts on pieces? I have been thinking that metal pieces would look too randam.. can anyone give me some feedback on the though or using some of those Wizkids/wizard of the Coast pre painted mini's at all? I think they might be the right size but am unsure as I have never seen one.. you would want pieces similar in size, dragon may be a problem.. thoughts from people that have these in their colections??

Brette:)

I just had a crazy thought.  I'll be going to Haiti in a month and then returning there in March.  You stated way back in this thread that your dream board might have pieces carved from wood.

I wonder if I could find someone who could carve your pieces fairly cheap as labor costs over there are insanely low ($2.00 a day on average). I'd need fairly detailed images/photos of what you wanted as well as size specifications, but it might be worth a shot.  I could imagine several people on these forums might be interested in such a possibility.

You'd need to know however that the carving may not be all that detailed, but lots of medieval chess pieces were fairly crude and that might add to their authenticity.  8)

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

I fully intend to paint minis for use, and may even create some variant rules for variant pieces/minis (hmmm.....).  I've got ideas for how to build a frame to hold the boards, but haven't made time to sketch them out for Pernille yet.  Over the Christmas holidays, hopefully!
