If you are a big fan of the Temple of elemental Evil, I think Lareth the Beautiful is nicer than Zuggtmoy...

Here in France, a problem is that many people are couch potatoes and watch so many US TV programmes that there are a lot of of babies whom names come from TV... So there is the Beverly Hills 90210 generation(Brenda, Brandon...), the Young and the restless generation...

But you have to pronounce these names with an horrible french accent. I think you are able to do that (cf. last page of Castle Amber    if you need help)

For example, I know someone who gave his son the name 'Dideji' (it comes from a character named D.J.   )

But I never met someone called Sipovic here. Neither Kyuss nor Orcus.

But a lot of Brenda, Brendon, Kelly, Dylan and, most of all, ... Sue Ellen and JR, from serial "Dallas" but written "Suelen" and "Geiar"  8O

Italian way!

Man, don't people think about their poor kids' social well being? :P (Though I did know a guy in college named Shithead... pronounced shi-theed...)

not quite the same thing, but years ago, when i worked in an accountants, there was a young girl who used to work in admin.

we had an old client called called Patricia Henry. she was a right old hag - everyone used to hate her - she was the ultimate scrooge, let me tell you. how the hell that woman made any money is beyond me, but anyway....

*something i will never forget*

sharon was typing out a letter to her, relating to a company of Tax & Pension Consultants.

now i really shit-you-not...the poor girl did the letter, it went through the partner (boss), was signed off and went to the client.

it was returned a few days later with a cheque for the fees. then, and only then, did someone notice that she had typed "Tax & Penis Consultants" 8O 8O

was the funniest thing ever. nobody noticed it at all til then - well at least nobody owned up to it.

it was a few weeks later, she did a letter to another client, about their tax - and was to do with their Capital Allowances. Well she only went and typed "Genital Allowances" instead! again it went out to the client and nobody said a word :D :D

funny as hell.

totally off topic, but quite amusing :)

I was close friends with two girls in college...their names were Gay and Houri (It was pronounced Whorey, I think she was Indonesian).  And yes, I was witness to several times to introductions when they had to say "Hi, I'm Gay and she's Houri" or "I'm Houri and she's Gay" and when someone was looking for them the person saying "Are you Gay?" or "Are you Houri?" in crowds of people and the girls having to sheepishly answer. Luckily both girls had good senses of humor, and no they weren't. What do parents think sometimes when they name kids?

The sad part about the Indonesian girl named Houri is that her parents probably meant to name her Houri because they knew the meaning of the word.

Cool, I just looked it up, I don't remember if Houri was a Muslim or not or if her parents were, they were from Indonesia, so perhaps.  Too bad such a nice name has such an unfortunate pronunciation.

Which reminds me at a college mixer one time I was witness to a drunken frat boy upon finding out her name say "So, are you whorey, Houri?"   To which she replied "Well, after that question, even if you were the last man on earth you'd never find out..."

In Islam, the houri (ﺣﻮﺭﻳﺔ), Ḥour-ul-`Ein or ḥawra' in Arabic, are described as "fair women of Paradise" awaiting devout Muslims. According to the Qur'an (55.56), the houri are pure, having never been touched by man or jinn and so they are virgins who marry the devout in the Jannah, the paradise, of afterlife.

The word 'virgin' in Arabic does not translate perfectly into English. A closer translation is 'pure being'. The use of the word is not always sexual.

The usual etymology derives houri from the word ḥawira, to be black-eyed, like a gazelle (but see the alternative etymology below).

Slightly more off-topic, but in my college days (also my main role-playing period) there was a local restaurant, which specialized in pub grub and seafood, called "The Oarhouse".

Now, my DM's mother was from Britain, and had a strong accent, in that she tended not to pronounce the letter 'h' at the beginning of words.  You should have seen the look on her face when she inquired as to our whereabouts...

"Whore" is a deliberate corruption of "Houri'...dates back to the crusades.

I've got to mention one of the guys I work with, Richard.  Now Richard meets Shirley.  They fall in love and decide to marry.  But Richard's surname is, wait for it, Shirley.  Now Shirley was none too keen on being Shirley Shirley.  Although I personally think it would be a great name.  And so they decide to take Shirley's surname.  So, Richard duly becomes Richard Hayter.  Understanably, his closest friends realise his mistake and take full advantage of calling him Dick Hayter which makes him sound like a lesbian porn star.

I'm not so sure that's a corruption...who the hell wants to sleep with a pure being/virgin?  Call me crazy but I know you all checked out the Succubus in the 1st Ed. MM....

That makes more sense, my co-workers are not the most trustworthy source of info (though I my self called a Phuc M Dingh(sp?)) and lost it...couldn't leave a message I was laughing so hard.

One of my customers back in 2000 was a law firm in Bedford with an attorney named Richard Head. He was actually really cool about it, but I think I'd have gone for the name change if I was him.
