i still think that pic is so utterly stupendous.

i was talking about this to family over new yea - my dad was well impressed with the quality of the pic.

as soon as i have funds available i am going to get one done too. most certainly - its just gonna have to be done and there is no two ways about it. the one i want done is most likely gonna be an interpretation similar to mikes as that is also one of my very favorite scenes.

my dad came up with an amazing idea, and the more i think of it, the better i like the idea. what we are going to do, is get the character out of our sheets that we want putting into the art, describe him/her as best we can and use a portrait of ourselves and ask for it to be "D&D-ised" into the art. if that could be done, that would be about as close as i could imagine a piece of art being perfect to me.

thats how its looking right now and i think it would be tremendous fun if he could do it.

I'm looking at this and thinking wow, wow, wow.

I'm so jealous...

Honestly, think about it....
Save $35 a week for 10 weeks...thats two months and change.
Maybe not eat out for a couple days a week, don't buy a comic or two, put off buying a new mini or game....
Well worth the memories.....

I still need a frame for it, it's now positioned above my desk, so I can see it every day while I work!  I hope someday to have Jeff Dee and Erol Otus prints to go up with it.....!

I finally showed my brother the print the other day, the other members of our group haven't seen the artwork or their characters therein. His character is the dwarven fighter (who is still in action, btw, 25 years later).  He was pretty much shocked into commenting something like "Wow!".  But he didn't even know/remember who Roslof was so i had to flash him a few covers before it all came back to him ( I used to use the modules in the old days as DM screens, so the group pretty well memorized covers like G1, G2m, G3, D1, D2 D3, Q1, etc).
He did remind me in the final battle a few things I had forgotten.  First, the final party consisted of a veratible army of PCs and NPCs as they went into the Spider Ship: Two clerics, two elven fighter mages, three dwarven fighters, two half orc fighters, one elven thief, a human illusionist, a human mage, a human ranger and even a monk!!! Second, the clerics weren't there through the final battle after Lolth used an Unholy word to blow the LG priests of Cuthbert off the Abyssal plane, so no healing since the clerics had also been carrying most of the healing potions and scrolls! (tactical error, that!).  And that his half orc fighter, Grotto, was the only character actually killed by Lolth in the final battle (although by the time Lolth was brought low everyone involved only had a handful of HPs or was bleeding to death with negatives  hit points) when he rolled a one to save vs poison after she bit him.  They had to use his ring of three wishes (only one wish left) to get back to the prime plane after they destroyed Lolth and the ship began falling apart, so he was mighty pissed about that since he was a half orc and couldn't be raised from the dead (1st ed rules), he was saving his ring of wishes for just that circumstance!
You see, the picture is worth all the memories alone...

Wow, what a great idea!  Talk about personalizing the artwork, I think that's an incredible suggestion!  It doesn't sound like too hard a task for Jim, I bet it wouldn't be a stretch for him to do that.  Maybe mail or email the photos when you send in the initial payment.  It can't hurt to ask. Let us know who it goes!  Believe me Al, ST1s, Fazzlewoods or Orange B3s wil come and go, but a one of a kind piece of art like this is unique.

oh i totally agree. see i am sat here now thinking "wow to get a piece of art of my own that nobody else in the world will have and it is based on my own interpretation" to me this IS better than anything i could possibly ever get my hands on - for prb the 1st time, we have one of the really truly great artists who are willing to do something like this. its too good a thing to pass up and i aint gonna.

my dad used to do a lot of samurai art on mirror glass with black ink and he was bloody good at it - i have been asking him for years to take it up again and even offered to pay for all the materials if he would just do it, but he wont. when i mentioned about the idea we came up with, he felt that for an established artist like Roslof, what i was suggesting, would be a "piece of cake". if it cost a little more, that would be fine too. it wouldnt even need to be perfect, cos i would just know, know what i mean?

thats the kinda thing you just cannot beat.

Man, if Erol were to draw my old party ... say fighting the Steroid Crab from White Plume Mountain ... well, I'd probably have some sort of weird D&D-gasm and just collapse on the spot.

Anyway, congrats on not only a fine piece of art, but a great idea as well.

Firstly, I want comment on how utterly fascinating this thread has become. Ya know?

Secondly, I think it is neat that Al's dad is involved in his interests.  8)

Yeh I meant to comment on that too. My father passed away a couple of years ago, my mom still knows we dabble in D&D but I guess it's never really bothered her one way or another, I think she was grateful for it as when we were younger it took up all our money (no money for drugs) and all our time (no time for drugs) and we hung out with guys that eventually became doctors and lawyers (no time for druggies).  :D
My father did get somewhat interested in D&D about 1980 or so because we played it constantly every chance we got, right out on the kitchen table.  I guess he felt he had to make sure it wasn't some kind of devil worshipping mind controlling cult whatever, so he announced one night he was going to just hover around and observe, no pressure there or anything.  8O   So I was running G3 for my original party, and they were at the Rakshasa room.  So when the characters busted down the door all I told them was that they saw the creatures as "trusted friends"...but my brother's sword was vibrating and detecting evil.  I just told them that something evil was around but these guys there were their friends and it must not be them (?).  The guys were pleading with me to tell them what was evil in the room but as a good DM I didn't give in.  Then my dad, obviously frustrated by their whining and wailing,  pipes up "You need to tell them what's going on!"  I guess even he was getting frustrated. I said no dad, I can't let them know because in the game they really don't know.  Then he said something like "Well, I'm your father, and I'm telling you right now to tell them what is going on!"  Boy I was really not very pleased, although the guys were happy and going along saying "Yeh, Mr. B, you make him tell us who the bad guys are!!!"   I held my ground though, and just to extricate myself from a tricky spot had the Rakshasas begin attacking the party to just get it over with. At that point I was just hoping dad would wander out and find something else to do that evening....
Then, during the combat, I had worked up a really primitive crit hits chart that looking back on it was pretty crappy.  We were just testing it out ocassionally (it would eventually be dumped) but it was in use that night.  20 was  crit, 1 was a fumble.  So my brother swings at a Rakshasa and crits, and I roll on the chart.  "A 99" I say, going down the chart..."crit hit to the.....groin."  My 15 year old brother cheers and says 'I CUT HIS BALLS OFF, YEH!!!"   At this, my father just shakes his head sadly, and heads out of the room. God knows what he thought of D&D then, but he never mentioned it again, probably too embarrassed his sons were playing a game where castration was obviously a nightly event, and one to be celebrated...  It still gives my brothers and I a chuckle when we repeat it around the gaming table.

lol What a great story badmike. My mom always saw my D&D games with slight suspicion, mostly because she thought I should outgrow it, but I think she accepted it because I was hanging out with my friends.

The party awakens in a place where there is no light and no sounds but their own. Characters with infravision can ascertain that all party members are presented. The place they are in looks and feels like a natural cave, about 30 feet in diameter.

well as mentioned previously elsewhere, mum n dad, since the early 80's have looked at D&D in a somewhat strange vein, but over the years, have somewhat mellowed to it, cos they know i still play it n stuff. mum is the same as ever and just thinks "its a kids game", but my dad now, is quite flexible to tons of stuff. he gets on the computer now more than i ever did, despite years back always saying "they are a waste of bloody space" - he likes getting music and films etc....and jeez life revolves around "its gotta be the wrong codec" or some such thing...

the common comment back at him nowadays is "yea dad youve told me like 4 times now" :D

hes a fun guy.

but art now, well he is well into that and is always sketching - pretty good too. shame he never really got into it more imo.

i've already asked him - i am writing a book, have been for some time, but will start it again once the marathon is out of the way - once its finished, i would like him to do the art for the front of the book for me. good or bad, it doesnt matter to me. i am gonna get enough copies printed proper, to give everyone in the family circle one each and i think art done by him, would just be fitting somehow :D

when he was picking up my 20,000 JG books with ,e. he looked at a few and thought they looked "quite good". he also really likes the cover of Q1 too. (showed him after showing him the mikes picture)....

I never really asked, but I think my mother's point of view was simple. She knew what we were doing, or more to the point, what we were not doing. No drugs or the like. Growing up in the late 70s with a culture of drug use probably scared my mother to death.

I think she picked up real early that the guys I hung out with were not that type, so who cares if we want to play a game. We were also a fairly out of doors group, too and played sports often. So it probably wasn't a game that she was concerned about, but the people who played it. I just hope my kids make the right kind of friends as I was lucky to do.

Also, I really do not think any of the TSR artwork would have turned her head much. Just go to your local big city institute of arts or museum...

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

I think that was eventually my parent's attitudes also.  I mean, every Friday night they knew exactly where we were, either at my house or one of the other guys, not drinking somewhere, and when would we have time for drugs (or money for that matter we spent every cent on D&D stuff).  Iagree that the drug culture of the late 60's through the70's freaked a lot of "normal" parents out, honestly we were too involved in gaming and sports to even think about drug use at the time. I remember my father did make an offhanded comment one time that unlike a lot of kids our age (late teens) we never seemed to be hanging around the house bored getting into trouble, it was his only grudging concession to D&D keeping us out of jail I suppose  :D
It also helped that the guy that introduced the game to me and played with us was just a A+, straight arrow kind of guy that was clean cut and always said "Yes sir", "yes Mam", and was very polite (he eventually became a Navy captain and a doctor).  I guess the other parents figured if Joe (the guy) was involved, it couldn't be too bad.  Luckily Joe wasn't a biker with long hair and tats, we would have never been allowed to play....

Bill is there by mistake. I need to move him elsewhere and fill up that page with the rest of the D&D cartoon characters as soon as I draw them.
