I think it's great.

The original Demonweb map has exactly one thing going for it: nostalgia. Otherwise, it's an unplayable mess (although, once past that, the layouts of Lolth's ship are quite well-done).

Had the Q1 map approached anything near the level of clarity and professionalism of the map posted at wizards.com, I would have been happy to attempt to DM the adventure more than the one time that I gave it a shot.

Actually, it looks really good.  It makes me interested in trying out this adventure again.

I wonder if this is part of a larger product on the WOC website?

It appears to be more an entry in Wizards' "Map of the Week" feature rather than an attempt at a full-fledged 3e conversion of Q1.

Either way, you can't beat the general quality of Wizards' maps (most really are quite good) ... and you definitely can't beat the price.

Well, it's official: I've got World Cup fever. I just downloaded the "Ole!" song (I'm skipping the accent marks) from the iTunes Music Store, then went down to a local sportsbook and got some action on tomorrow's games.

"Ole! Ole-Ole-Ole! Ole! Ole!" (repeat)

+++++

Sidebar: I'm thinking it's Brazil's tournament to win or lose. I suspect many of our UK users think I'm wrong, though ... and Rooney is back! :)

WOC has not been keeping up their Map of the Week feature...it is mostly just an old archive.

I must be looking at a different internet. Beginning with 6/6/06 — two days ago — I see a weekly entry (with no missed weeks at all) for as far back as my monitor will scroll.

:) X you are funny

i think brazil always will be strong favorites to win, tho when they dont perform, they DO look decidedly average, as they did in France 98.

you can never count out the hosts of the tournament - they always play well, this time its Germany, maybe past their heyday, but still, at home, you can count on them to come out all guns blazing.

i think australia will be dark horses - gus hiddink is coaching them, and he is bloody good! look what he did with south korea 4 years ago - hes like god there now.

i think european teams will do well, considering its in germany. the climate and the pitch conditions will suit them perfectly, so it will be just like a normal seasonal game for them.

england will always have a good chance, they always do, but generally fluff it. this is auguably the best team we've had since winning it last 40 years ago, and besides i have them as my team in the draw at work (he £64 riding on it so)....

spain are always regarded highly but always fall short on the big stage, france are always big gunds and you always have zidane and thierry henry to deal with.

beyond that *shrugs*, maybe argentina.

i think for ther USA...its a great learning experience. they need to be in this competition each time round and the players need to be of a better mould than they currently are, but they are improving all the time. i think they have a very outside chance of getting to the knockout stages, that is if they dont fluff the group games like they did the last time they were in the world cup.

i'm actually looking forward to the tournament very much. 1st games on tonight and england play tomorrow - CMON ENGLAND!!! :)

*ahem* so there you go.

oh and rooney eh. well they wont risk him anytime soon, or all hell will let loose back home between club & country. he's not ready yet anyway - needs training and fitness for a few weeks.

i dont think we need him just now anyway.

i'm not just saying this cos its one of my all-time fave mods, but i found the demonweb very easy to DM. i made a ton of my own modifications anyway, as well as beefing out all the alternate worlds to make it a massive campaign and it worked very well indeed, and that was on multiple occasions as i have DMd it more than once.

mind you, i can see what youre on about tho, as it CAN be very confusing. easy to figure out though, if you study it a little and plan ahead before playing. my current group who are at about 4th level, i plan to eventually run them through the whole GDQ series, so lets hope they get that far!! :D

It's funny how different products can affect players/DMs in totally different ways.

The Demonweb made my brain ache as a DM. The most-often heard lines at our table were: "Okay, you guys are about here, and you're travelling in this direction ... no, wait ... that's not right. Hang on a second ... okay, you're here ... no, wait. Um ... okay, I messed up. We have to play the last three encounters all over again. My bad."

well i made them map it themselves anyway and they never even saw the map. what map they had is whatever they made of it - kept them on their toes. easy enough to say "the passage generally leads 50' east before becoming too gloomy to see any further" etc...worked for me. i just photocopied the map and highlighted where they went.

funnily enough actually, each time i have DMd it, the PCs have always travelled the same way too (diff groups of ppl as well).

but yeah, there are other mods which just confuse the hell out of me and so i wont DM them, which is a shame as they do look good as well :(

As someone living in the United States, I don't follow the World Cup.  I have only heard the "Ole . . ." when eating at local Mexican restaurants and when listening to one of Fish's live albums.

I read somewhere that every country has a distinct rendition of "Ole . . ."    Does every country really sing it in a different way, with different intonations or accents or whatever?  Could I, as an American, detect any differences between the Scottish, English, or Welsh versions?

go check out a film called "the replacements" it has gene hackman, keanu reeves & rhys ifans in it. rhys sings "ole" a few times during the film (he is welsh if you didnt know)...and how he sings it in that is the way it is normally sung :)

I swear that wasn't there a few months ago.

I mean, I am happy to be wrong....really happy....but where was this hiding?

So...where was this hiding when I looked for it several months ago?

Mind you...I am happy to be wrong...but I suspect it will be gone again when I return.
