So we've got a continuous theme of red-yellow spine inlay and colored flyleafs from 1977 to Jan 1979, longer if you count the DMG as well. The one exception is the T1st PHB...I'm beginning to think its a "special" copy as well -- how many are known to exist?

Based on reading the forum, I was under the impression only 2 or 3, but looking at the poll so far there seems to be at least 9. :?

It might be beneficial if the folks other than I/O who say that they own one identify themselves. :)

I voted yes to a single copy. I know I have at least one, but I didnt dig out the box and check for multiples.

Yep I've got one.  My oldest son and I found the minty PHB, a minty first DMG, and a minty second MM all together at the used bookstore.
I just got it out and compaired it with my first printing PHB and everything matches with what was already stated so far.

What about the 2nd print PHB?  Does it have the striped spine inlay?

Do we have an idea of the print runs for the T1st and 1st print PHBs?

Would it make sense to run a seperate poll on who has a 1st print w/ yellow flypaper? To compare rarity? So, atm 29 voters own at least 12 copies of a 1st print w/ white flypaper (2 have single copies and 5 have multiple copies). If there are as many yellow flypaper versions, it would be a slight indication that the print run was about the same.

According to the history booklet in 2E Silver Ann. box, print run for the 1st pr. DMG was 40,000 copies. Would it be logical to assume the print run of the 1st print PHB was higher? PHB should sell better, as there are more players than DMs.

Interesting. According to my eye, they are purply-brown/yellow, quite a constrast from the 3rd red/yellow. It's possible this was originally red/yellow and just faded...perhaps not. I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

[edit]As promised:

The spine on the left is the 2nd, the right is the 3rd for comparison.  (Sorry about the scan lines, my scanner hates 3D objects).

Yeah, that is interesting. My 1st has the same purple/yellow, and my 3rd has the same red/yellow.  I don't think it's ageing or fading.

So, what would the going rate be for a true 1st (depending on condition)?

I'd pay $200 for a mint copy.

I'd very much doubt such a copy exists.  They're rare enough that finding one in VF would be hard enough...

Curiously, my fourth print PHB also has a red/yellow thread stripe, but the fifth print and sixth print with orange end-paper have none.
