As you are probably aware William (Dathon) has listed his Pre-Pub R3 for auction:

Any bets on what this will go for?

Interesting that one of our valuation board members believes the est value ($1000) is too low by starting the auction at a min of $1500.  8O

$1,550? (Judging by the lack of interest, at stratospheric price ranges, on Frank's R4 "pre-pub").

hmm based on the R1 Pre Pub Price (under $1K) this will be interesting:

Yeah, I remember that one (good provenance, too), but R3 is "rarer" and we're in upswing market mode again.

Still, if you were asking for a "bet", rather than a "guess", Mike...

I'm out. Besides, I'd rather have Tsojconth if I had the money.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

i would like to have that but i aint willing to pay $1500. $1000 would be my max as it is for everything else of that level of rarity.

IMHO, with no disrespect to William at all, I was thinking $1500 maybe a bit on the high side as well considering what the R1 prepub went for. Personally, if I had the cash I would be interested, but just like Ian,  there are lots of other things I would rather have as opposed to the "prepubs", i.e Tsojconth, ST1, OB3, PotVQ, DG etc. . Contentwise they seem to be virtually the same as the published ones, so I would rather have items that would be a bit different then what I already own.

BTW, whatever happened with that? Did someone end up buying it or does Frank still have it? :?

If not, it was your doppelganger here on The Acaeum. *points to auction date*

Sorry, I don't have ANY of the pre-pubs. Wish I did. :/

otoh, I have Original Notes and Original Maps... ;> (nfs)

But Dathon's over in Classifieds sure looks to be the real thing. One of my bright ideas when I started the RPGA... at that time, of real interest only to others with vision. And now they can get their handsome payoffs.

GenCon South was the premier of the newly-minted RPGA. We did Eric Shook's "Eye of the Bog" as the intro adventure, and ran a session or two of R1 Falx informally, and premiered an AD&D Wargame, "Battle Royal". (I never see THAT one pop up for sale, tho. I went down to Bob Blake's house in Valpo for a weekend and we cranked it out. Blake, RIP, wrote a lot of things for JG and ran the GenCon AD&D Open for many years.)

R2 Hydell was the adventure I wrote for the 1980 DM's competition around June/July '80 (which I won; see the silly picture in Dragon forty-something) and then published for RPGA. Don't recall ever using it in a con tourney, tho I may be wrong.

The R3/4 tourney was really the big splash for RPGA. There were at least a dozen of the PrePubs, don't recall exactly. So it's not surprising that this has become one of the most famous and allegedly rarest of the AD&D collectibles. But as I said above, put Battle Royal on your hit list; there *might* be 2-3 copies out there, tops, and it was the first thing ever run for the RPGA -- before the RPGA even had that name.

*g*. Just as well you stated that up-front, Frank? :D

(sure we know, by now!)

Thanks for that other background info.

Don't recall "Battle Royal" mentioned in the histories... Rarity and price don't always go hand-in-hand, but I know a few people around here will undoubtedly have an eye open, just in case.

Hey Wiliam, I noticed that you called out the names of the pregens as Greyhawk characters.  I'd be interested in that info for my tourney and anarams web pages, at some point after the auction, if you're willing :D

Are those characters present in the published R3?  I don't have my copies handy (in KS), so I can't compare.  Any info would be appreciated!   Thanks!

The characters are all based on real ones from my Philadelphia campaign (1976-79, thus predating my TSR work), with original players as follows...

Athelstan (nee Strider): Randy Rice

Tristrum: Everett Wood*

Venacia (nee Aviance): Aileen Shea

Triladir: Don Paterson

Zanzibar: Everett Wood*

Gadoff: Howard Fessler

Don Paterson was the guy who introduced me to D&D. Aileen was my significant other at the time. Dave Axler (see below) badgered me into applying at TSR. Everett has been to both of my weddings, and Howard rejoined years later in the online version of the campaign briefly. (Randy, where did you go? Classic paladin, great roleplaying dude...)

* Though another of the original players is Dr. David Axler (U of PA), whose PCs do appear in other R modules, I used two of Everett's characters to create a more balanced party for tournament purposes.
