You might be forgetting that Paypal makes interest on every penny of balances kept with them. That adds up to a crapload of cash, since they invest it. Considering they pay their support and investigative teams around $50 a year collectively, they are still making a killing. And if you want to look at it as a business, how many businesses charge you extra when you use a credit card instead of cash? Are you forgetting that eBay OWNS Paypal? It should be a free service when you use it to pay a Paypal auction or fee. They are just trying to make even more money. I am all for capitalism, but monopolies are bullshyte.

Good for them!  But what does this have to do with the price of tea in china?

Do you sell your products / services / time / etc. for less than the market will bear?  Do you give people discounts because you make too much money?

Very few, because in general that violates the rules of the various credit card associations.  It generally costs a merchant much more to accept payment by credit card than by cheque or cash, but its very difficult to operate most retail businesses with a merchant account.  It comes down to a simple business decision.  Would you rather have 100% of $100 or 95% of $200?

Perhaps one of the major reasons that Ebay bought Paypal was to make more money?  Sure its nice to control the whole process from listing through payment but the main reason isn't convienece, its profit.

Its always nice to say that other people/organizations should do more for free.  I think Ebay sellers should provide free shipping.  Afterall, they've made enough profit from the auction itself.

Isn't making money the primary reason PayPal exists?

Despite what I said above, I agree with you.  Monopolies don't serve capitalism well.  However, Paypal isn't a monopoly (yet).  There are alternatives to PayPal, just none as convienent or as widely used.  As PayPal's fees and rules become more onerous, the opportunities for its competitors increase.  In the long run, the rules and fees will stablize at whatever the market will bear.

No, making money is NOT the primary reason Paypal exists. It may be the reason eBay bought it, but that is not what it was originally invented for. I've been on eBay basically since Day 1, when there were no categories, just 100 or so listings. Same with Paypal, which used to be X.com, and which freely stated that they were satisfied with making interest on the balances of accounts.

As far as discounts, Rodent, I do indeed often sell things for less than I might be able to get elsewhere. I am not concerned with having the biggest bank account, I am concerned with items staying with people who will enjoy and appreciate them. There is nothing wrong with making money, but trying to squeeze every last Lincoln out of customers and the capitalist system is not only idiotic, it is sad. Anyone who runs a successful business should be thanking whatever pantheon they believe in that they make enough money to put a roof over they and their families' heads, and perhaps have some extra. I deal with a lot of different people on a day-today basis, and the greed and sloth I see makes me sick. And it's only getting worse.

So if you want to defend a corporate structure that considers you an easily manipulated "user", be my guest. Let them manipulate the money right out of your pocket. Follow the herd.

Addendum: Paypal IS indeed a monopoly, since eBay goes well out of its way to discourage any other type of payment, and in fact provides far less support and coverage for such payers. That is monopolizing. Microsoft might be able to give you some info about that.
