I got into AD&D in 1978. From that time onwards, I was buying stuff regularly, reading WD, Dragon and all that and spending way too much of my time browsing the shelves of my local games shop. But I bought my OCE in 1984, never having seen one before (nor having seen any earlier sets for that matter).

I bought it from my usual haunt, a Games Workshop in England. The manager told me that the set had been re-printed as part of TSR's tenth anniversary.

You can see what's coming, I presume...

According to the information on this site, the OCE was printed from 1977-1979. Does anyone have any reason to believe that the info I was given might have been correct or do you think the little shrinkwrapped critters had been sitting in a warehouse for five years?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh and I don't have it any more. Guess why I've started hanging around here.

It's not completely unreasonable to think that they were reprinted for the 10th anniversary -- except you're the first person we've heard of to mention that.  I'd think we'd have heard of this before, especially since 1984 is a relatively late date in terms of D&D (there were millions of players by '84).

Secondly, while reprinting the set for the 10th anniversary might have been a good idea, it also would have been a simple matter to include something to identify it as a 10th anniversary set -- a sticker, a "Happy Birthday TSR" flier, or something.  The fact it's identical to the 77-79 printing indicates that it's probably just a leftover.
