This quote is right from the Acaeum description:"MV1 Midnight on Dagger Alley by Merle Rasmussen

Attempting to solve the "one-use" problem of the related MSOLO modules, TSR introduced the "Magic Viewer".  Basically, all of the text and maps are "scrambled" with red speckles; the red plastic viewer screens these speckles out, allowing you to see the text / drawing underneath.  A good idea in theory; in practice, is irritating and blindness-inducing.  It was also utilized in CM5 Mystery of the Snow Pearls."

Does anyone know if this is true?  Does using the book/viewer actually cause harm to the eyes?  8O

It doesn't actually cause damage, that note was a bit of "poetic liscense" so to speak, they were being figurative, not literal.

What's cool about it though, at least with Dagger Alley, is that you can't see what you're walking into until you're more or less already upon it.  Makes for some mildly fun surprises.

I played that one with my 7yr old son last year and we had a pretty good time with the monk.  We both still have our vision, by the way.   :D

Does anyone have a picture of the viewer?

Of course I bought a copy that is missing the damned thing.

It's a rather large, tight-fitting foam helmet, blaze orange.

I'll see if I can get mine off long enough to snap a picture of it.

It's just a piece of red plastic, a little thicker than cellophane.

Although I like to use my red/blue 3D glasses instead.

Thanks.  So, you think red celophane would work?  Should it be liited to a certain size?

Yes.

The real viewer is roughly credit card sized, with a 1/2 inch or so border, IIRC.

That's odd.  Here's a listing with viewer that came with mine.  Far cooler:

Negative. That ain't it, pard'ner. Although I have seen this before. The actual view is cardboard - yes, about the size of a credit card - with a rectangular strip (about the size in this picture) of red celephane.

I think people cut the red piece from 3-d glasses and the like. Works just as well.

If I can, I will get one out tonight...

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

The one in the picture Aneoth posted looks like one of the ones that came with the Crimson Crystal CYOA books.

Yea, just like a couple weeks ago I think.  It's around here somewhere.

Also could be one of the red strips that came with original Transformers toys.  They had a similar effect on part of the back of the box.

Sorry fellas.  As you can see I did a thread search before posting my question.  This was an old thread I raised.

Thanks for the comments and pictures.

I think that some came with cardboard border and some without.  I would have to dig out my copies to confirm.  I would guess that they ran out of the nicer ones and substituted the plain plastic instead.
