Lordan wrote in Dice for days!:Dice have been going for insane prices over the past year+...especially with the popularity of the Dice Maniacs Club and other collector's pages on FB. Some Chessex sets will set you back $800 + and last year, vintage sets started to go through the roof. Where you could get any Holmes loose for a few bucks a pop...good luck now! Also, the dice that some people now make on their own...absolutely beautiful (and pricey!)..... While I'm told I don't need more dice, I shrug it off :)

Now that's impressive, if not a bit insane.

I’m not a dice collector. I know the original sets and percentile are in there, anything jump out to anyone as special?

Original sets are selling like hot cakes. No reason I can think of, except they are original. You have at least 5 complete sets in there (going by d4s) and many 0-9 d20, which are also highly sought.

That bag is gold right now.

All of them. :)

Most of those are about as old-school as you can get.  They are the low impact dice that were included in the Holmes Basic Set. Some are in pristine condition too.  The upper bag is a mixed lot, mostly from later Basic box sets.

Dang. That got me right in my goblin.
The Holmes are all awesome and will catch most people's attention, but the bubblegum pinks from the pre-TSR era, the hand-highlighted 20, and that entire top bag are just SCREAMING at me. Straight unicorn dice, these days. Which are armory? Which are odd Moldvay colors?

I mean... if I were a dragon, I'd want that as a pillow.

Welcome to the acaeum DGL :)

For those that don’t know, Dan is a very knowledgeable dice collector. Glad to have your expertise around here!

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

Didn't know these existed. They look to be from an era later than I usually collect (1990s?), but the Waldenbooks name makes it interesting as one of those dead-mall relics where we used to buy this stuff. Their Xignals newsletter (1983+) had D&D articles that might be useful in pinning down when titles became available...does anybody do that anymore? A decade ago when Playing at the World was published, everyone was doing that...now it's mostly about watching valuations multiply in an inflationary economy.

You might want to warn people next time you break that big ol bag out, that's pretty shocking!

In regards to "special" Holmes dice, increment has done several posts & videos on them. The Creative Publications variants stand out. Also rarer colors in the later TSR Dice.

I think a big part of the explosion in values has a lot to do with the work people like increment here and others in the dice groups in understanding what's what in vintage dice.

When you become comfortable in knowing exactly what you're buying, you're willing to spend more.

With collections being sold, the portrayal of the player that owned them comes in to play sometimes (but definitely not always - Greg Stafford's dice collection went for basically nothing).
Collections of really old gem dice in the right colors can go for astounding prices. But they have to be from the correct era for it's type.

These are the dice I still have from back in the day. The ones on the right are probably the oldest. The white d20 in the back is one of the old Gamescience dice. I don't remember having a red d20 though.  We used to paint the numbers with the same paint we used for miniatures. I am not sure where I got the yellow d20.
