On the illustration of the inside cover of D1-2 Descent to the Depths of the Earth there is a stone slab with runes. (There is also a nice little nod to Marvel Comics as someone pointed out in an earlier post).

Does anyone know what the translation of the runes is?

Cheers,
Curt

"Beware of Asberdies". Isn't he the lich in the small cave, with a bag of holding containing a cursed crown, scepter and orb?
Oh man, I can't believe I remembered that. I truly have no life.

Nod to Marvel Comics?...gotta check that out.  I don't recall ever seeing that but it has been awhile since I have pulled that one out of the closet.

Asberdies the Lich I remember though.  Nearly wiped out my entire party when I played Queen of Spiders.  Does anyone recall which Planescape supplement or module referred to Greyhawk's lich infestation?  I remember reading one of them and laughing my ass off because of the way they referenced Oerth as being full of liches and how no one in their right mind should ever go there.

Ahhhh....I love Greyhawk!!!

Thanks Deadlord.

That makes the picture even more interesting. I really respect the extra effort put into the early modules to give them a really great flavor without being verbose.

Cheers,
Curt

Just to clarify, looking at the treasure chest on the first page there is a picture of spiderman's mask on the front and inside sticking out is Capt. Ameica's shield and I believe Ironman's helmet. Cool as hell :D :D :D .

A-HA!!!!!

Took a bit to find my copy of D1-2 and yes I did notice the Capt. America shield, the Spider-Man mask, and the 70's/early 80's Iron Man helmet.  As a collector of comics I find that to be really cool.

And as for the lich thing....just like an old song or line from a movie, once it got stuck in my head I couldn't rest until I found where it came from.  On page 112 of the Planescape supplement The Inner Planes under the entry for Citadel Cavitius is a comment from the narrator that is talking about Vecna and Acererak.  "You ask me, it sounds like that Oerth world's full of liches.  You won't catch me there!"

See....Planescape is good for something.

So Oerth has built in Planescape deterrant, I like it!

On the runes, it looks like they're pretty standard Nordic/Tolkien runes, but I certainly can't manage to get Asberides' name in there ;)

They are indeed runes, but they make no sense when translated. I think it is possible they were just randomly added. Or maybe Maxwell designed the pic during a drugged episode. He did used to work for Gygax as his right-hand man, didn't he?

It looked like the identical ones read "No No No" which was interesting, but I didn't bother much futher with them after you said you made up the Asberides translation Frank :D

After taking a second look at the symbols I realized that the gray symbols represent meaning, and the black symbols represent characters.

With some quick internet research I came up with the following translation:

BEWARE
Of
NEW DAY
****************
HAIL TRAVELER
No JOY
No SUN
Nor HAPPYNESS

GIANT <Perhaps a signature?>

Obviously not a perfect translation but it does begin to take on some meaning.
Anyone have more insight into rune meanings? I'm sure a cleaner translation can be made.

Cheers,
Curt

I began to try for meanings, but my head started to hurt, so I stopped. It looks like a pretty good translation to me.

Howdy,

The runes are Germanic. I translated them back in highschool, using the Dragon Magazine #68 article on runes. :) So much for scholarly research. I am interested in the gray symbols representing meaning. Good catch!

Howdy,

OK here is what I came up with (CAPS indicate runes translated for meaning, lowercase indicates runes translated for their phonetic equivalent):

BEWARE
of
MYSTERIOUS RACE
****************
HAIL TRAVELER
no JOY
no ?
nor DAYLIGHT
GIANT

The question mark above represents the rune I've been unable to locate. It is the rune that looks like a Greek Sigma. It might be a misdrawn rune Sowulo (Sun). Seems redundant to say "sun" and then "day" or "daylight".

Anyone recognize the missing rune?

I don't have a copy of D1-2, sadly.  Can someone post a scan of the runes?  (Please tell me they aren't standard futhark!).  :)
