They come up occasionally, I figure about three a year.  Thanks for pointing it out, it's on my "wish list". ;)

I particularly like the 500 printed but less than 100 in circulation... does that mean that they have the "rest" in a box to sell..???

They've got boxes of that Wilmark stuff in the basement, I'm sure.
Don't overpay, be patient and you should get it for a very nice price.

Not to mention the Wilmark Dynasty stuff is El Stinko in terms of quality.  Nice to own as a historical artifact, but you'll never run/play it, and you've created (and illustrated) better homemade dungeons when you were 18 and first started playing.  I wouldn't pay over $10 per item.

Star Frontiers collection with a copy of Metamorphosis Alpha.  Only $90. Seems to be a knowledgable seller.   Anyone know if he posted here at one time?

I might have actually considered bidding on it until I saw that he had an opening bid of $75.00 and shipping is $7.30 for 3 small peices of paper.

BOXED Battle of Five Armies; 2+ days left, $150 minimum, no takers so far:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

Anyone have any idea how rare these are?  I don't recall seeing a boxed copy before, but the ziplock versions of most games from the late 70s seem to be the first printings/editions vs. the later boxed reprints....

Howdy Allan -

I don't know how rare the various printings are. I believe the game was published originally by the author in ziplock, with a B&W map (I haven't seen any of those printings); then TSR worked out a deal with the author and put it out under their label (still in ziplock, although the map was in colour); and finally TSR put out a boxed version.

I have had both a ziplock and boxed version, and there is no difference between the two (other than the container) that I could see. I've seen a number of ziplock versions on ebay, and in fact sold my copy a few months ago. The only box version I've seen was a couple of years ago which is the one I won - had to pay a fair amount for it, more than it is worth possibly (I had to outbid Burnie Bros). $150 opening bid seems a bit rich, especially as there is also a reserve. I would put the value of the ziplock at $60-75, and the box at about $100-120.

So to answer your question, I would say that the boxed version is significantly rarer than the ziplock, even though its a later printing. All the reviews of the game that I've read from the time period have all been lukewarm at best, so its possible TSR stopped printing shortly after moving to the box due to poor demand.

Regards

Mike

Re: TSR's Battle of the Five Armies

I don't have my boxed set in front of me, and I used to have the ziplock version until I sold it last year for well over $100, but I seem to remember that the ziplock version had an errata sheet, where the boxed version did not.  If my memory is correct that would mean the boxed version came first, though the reasoning above sounds perfectly reasonable with the ziplock coming first.  Anyone have both handy to check?
